October 20 – Sweet Tea Trio – 7:30 p.m.

August 2, 2017 by Dogwood

sweetteatrioRising country group, Sweet Tea Trio, brings their fresh sound and beautiful harmonies to the Dogwood Black Box on Friday, October 20 at 7:30 p.m.
The group is opening nine dates for rap-rocker Kid Rock in September throughout Michigan and Indiana. Earlier this year they were chosen by LiveNation to be the opener for Bon Jovi in Birmingham, AL and most recently they wowed fans at the CMA Music Fest in Nashville. Later in October they will open for Deana Carter in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
The three young ladies, Victoria Camp, Savannah Coker and Kate Falcon were named Alabama’s Country Female Artist of the Year for 2016 and are winning the hearts and catching the eye of fans across the country. Their sound is unique, unlike what you hear on country radio today.
The Trio’s self-titled EP debuted on the i-Tunes Country Chart at number 11 this past June and has continued to delight audiences and the country music industry alike.
Originally from Alabama, the now Nashville-based trio met in January of 2014 through a Birmingham artist development program called Nashville Bound. Each artist sang individually when they initially entered the program but quickly felt an instant vocal connection once they sang together. The Trio has been performing together ever since.

September 17 – The General Assembly – 3:00 p.m.

July 25, 2017 by Dogwood

generalassemblyThe General Assembly was formed in the fall of 1971 by a group of musicians from the Ludington area . The players enjoyed the sounds of the big bands and wanted to regularly play the music long associated with such names as Basie, Kenton, Herman, Miller, the Dorseys, and others. Since that time the band has performed throughout Michigan, from the Detroit area to Traverse City, while receiving requests for appearances from as far away as San Francisco. Audiences have responded with “The best in the Midwest”, “Great performance”, “We should have had a dance floor”, and “Our audience insists you come back next year.”
Many of the band members have been employed outside the field of music. A partial list of occupations includes doctors, dairy farmers, teachers, the operator of an automobile recycling center, an attorney, and a college president. While most of these performers are not full time musicians, they all have extensive training and experience. Some are professionals who have settled down to a steadier life but continue to play for their love of the music. As musicians have left throughout the years replacements have come from a continuously larger area, with some traveling over 100 miles one way to rehearse with the group on a regular basis.
The director of The General Assembly is its lead trombonist, Tom Sheppardson, who holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in music education and has an extensive performance background, ranging from Dixieland jazz to the symphony orchestra. He has performed with such notables as Louis Armstrong, Max Roach, The Temptations, Bobby Vinton, Henry Mancini, Peter Nero, and many others.
While many groups advertise the “big band sound,” The General Assembly is not just a combo playing old songs. It is a full 17 piece orchestra with female vocalist performing the best of the old and new in music for dancing and listening.

August 12 – Rick Reuther presents "Rags to Riches: A Tribute to Tony Bennett" – 7:30 p.m.

May 24, 2017 by Dogwood

reutherRick Reuther’s show Rags to Riches is a loving tribute to the music and life of singer Tony Bennett. As performed by vocalist Reuther with pianist/arranger Tom Hagen heading the band, the show highlights Bennett’s iconic performances from his earliest days through today, as the 90 year old singer is still bringing audiences to their feet. The set list includes many of his classics like Rags to Riches, Because of You, The Shadow of Your Smile and the enduring I Left My Heart in San Francisco. It also includes some of the lesser known musical gems that Bennett had such a knack for discovering and making his own.
The show is backed by a talent packed ensemble including Tom Hagen on keys, Bassist Elgin Vines, Drummer/Vocalist Cherie Lynn, sax man Mike Lutley and percussionist Kevin Jones. With swinging moments and those that will move you to tears, this show is a wonderful tribute to the guy Frank Sinatra once said has “the best pipes in town”.

July 13 – The Rough and Tumble – 7:30 p.m.

April 19, 2017 by Dogwood

the-rough-and-tumble

The Rough and Tumble, an Americana-folk duo, will bring their harmonies and versatile instrumentation to the Dogwood Black Box on Thursday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The Rough and Tumble used to say they were from Nashville, Tennessee. That was before April 2015 when members Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler sold everything, paid their last month’s rent, bought a camper, and took to the road full time.

The duo, along with their 97 pound dog, Butter, have been touring the country for more than four years. The folk-Americana, close-harmony pair have been known to vary their instruments from classic acoustic guitar and harmonica to melodicas and homemade shakers made from wine bottles, all set to their original songwriting that has been described as “quirky, haunting, and deliberate.”

With three EP’s under their belt, a double album called The Rough & Tumble’s Holiday Awareness Campaign, which highlights the unappreciated holidays in an ambitious songwriting feat, and a short film soundtrack called Pieces and Pieces that was released in 2016, The Rough and Tumble have kept busy on and off the road.

You can find The Rough and Tumble at www.theroughandtumble.com, with their music is also available on iTunes and Spotify.

May 13 or 15 – Dogwood Summer Youth Theater Auditions

April 19, 2017 by Dogwood

midsummernightsdream1

The Dogwood Summer Youth Theater will present the classic story, A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Auditions will be held at the Dogwood Center Black Box. Kids ages 12 and up are invited to come and try out on either Saturday, May 13 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. or Monday, May 15 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

William Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. Taking place in a mythical Athens and an enchanted forest, there is a handsome fairy king, a misguided parent, star-crossed lovers, a weaver who’s transformed into a half-donkey, wood sprites and elves. This work is widely performed around the world, and no wonder – it’s about the world’s most popular pastime, falling in love. But as Puck knows, falling in love can make fools of us all.

Casting calls for at least 12 males and 8 females with many, many extra roles for fairies and goblins.

The Dogwood Summer Youth Theater will be directed again this summer by Chelsea Webb. The performance dates for A Midsummer Night’s Dream are July 28 and 29.
For more information please contact the Dogwood Center at 231.924.8885.
