December 1, 2017 by Dogwood

irish-dance-and-bandThrough favorite Irish melodies, traditional steps and Celtic instrumentals, Dublin Irish Dance’s production of “Stepping Out” tells a story of the Irish Immigration to America after the Great Famine of the mid-1800’s. Greeted by diverse cultures and rich traditions from around the globe, the new Irish emigrants congregate in dance gatherings where ancient Irish melodies fuse with African rhythms, creating American tap dance and early roots music. “Stepping Out” celebrates the incredible evolution of Irish traditional dance and music, showcasing the new pioneers who will define the standard of Traditional Irish music and dance.

January 27 – Sweet Water Warblers – 7:30 p.m.

November 30, 2017 by Dogwood

sweet-water-warblers-2Formed at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in 2014, the Sweet Water Warblers have gone on to attract serious admiration wherever they appear. Michigan songbirds, Rachael Davis, Lindsay Lou and May Erlewine had each carved out successful careers on the American Roots Music circuit and in the process grew to respect each other’s work. When they finally gelled into the potent force they have become, it was the most natural coming together – three singing sirens and multi-instrumentalists whose repertoire swings from gospel and bluegrass to soul and even joyful interpretations of pop.

December 15 – Joshua Davis Trio – 7:30 p.m.

October 3, 2017 by Dogwood

downloadJoshua Davis Trio returns to the Dogwood Center on December 15!  A tried and true Michigan musician and local favorite, Joshua Davis released his new album, The Way Back Home, in September.  Produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, The Way Back Home is Davis’ latest full-length studio album and first since his 2015 appearances as a Top 3 finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” – Season 8. The 11 original Americana songs featured on The Way Back Home reflect an honest, hardworking family man scribing scenes of the cycle of life through dark, broken, hopeful, and triumphant times.

An upbringing that occupied the urban landscapes of Detroit while spending summers in the wilderness on the southern tip of Lake Superior in Marquette, MI brings into view the backdrop of Davis’ latest works. The Way Back Home follows a series of singular recordings by the prolific songwriter who has shared the stage with a “Who’s Who” of American folk music icons such as Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Greg Brown, and Abigail Washburn. Recorded in East Lansing by legendary engineer Glenn Brown, The Way Back Home highlights Davis’ longtime collaboration with Jack White’s bassist Dominic John Davis, pianist Mike Lynch, and drummer Mike Shimmin.

Already a heavily touring/recording artist with his previous band Steppin’ In It and as a solo act, getting a call from “The Voice” was completely out of the blue for Davis. Unfamiliar with the show, he initially rejected the inquiry but the producers were persistent. After being convinced by his wife and allowed to skip the auditions, Davis signed up for an incredible six months in the national TV spotlight. He went on to sing high profile duets with Sheryl Crow (Live Finale: “Give It To Me”) and Adam Levine (Live Finale: “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shows”), and he helped break the mold of original material being showcased on “The Voice.” Davis was the first artist to sing an original on the show, which spawned the later segment, “This Week of Original Songs.”

Davis entered the recording sessions for The Way Back Home with a well-oiled machine of a voice primed for the collaboration with Steve Berlin. His rough-n-tumble grit mixes with an undeniable Midwesterner’s charm for a soaring vocal performance on The Way Back Home. With his voice taking center stage, Davis’ signature lyricism and deft acoustic guitar work is backed by a trio of Michigan’s finest musicians.

“The Way Back Home is a very personal look at where I’ve been and who I’ve become,” says Davis. “In my 20’s, I felt like a disconnected ghost going town to town performing every night, and it just wasn’t a healthy life. I’ve learned many valuable lessons in how to be a better person, husband and father. Home grows and changes with or without you. If you don’t pull it together, it’ll leave you behind. I feel very reassured to have found stable ground in life and in a career that isn’t necessarily filled with security. The album takes listeners through my own trials and tribulations.”

November 6 – Jeff Daniels and the Ben Daniels Band – 7:30 p.m. – SOLD OUT

August 9, 2017 by Dogwood

jeff-daniels-and-ben-daniels-band-640x360-1b12c10cdd

Emmy-winning actor, musician and Michigan native Jeff Daniels comes to the Dogwood Center with the Ben Daniels Band on Monday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m.!

Jeff Daniels, known for such blockbusters as The Divergent Series: Allegiant/Ascendant, Steve Jobs, The Newsroom, and Dumb and Dumber, bought a Guild D-40 from Herb David’s Guitar Studio in Ann Arbor, threw it in the back of his old Buick, and moved to New York City. That guitar led to a creative outlet, became a solace, a road into the artist that he didn’t know existed. Now, over 40 years later, he just released his 8th record, Simple Truths and is touring the area with the Ben Daniels Band.

On his album, Days Like These, Jeff Daniels and the Ben Daniels Band recorded songs that often were inspired by his career. For instance, the idea for the bluegrass-y Now You Know You Can comes from the filming of the pilot of  The Newsroom, the HBO drama for which he won an Emmy playing Will McAvoy, anchor of a cable newscast.
When Ben Daniels decided he was going to be a musician, it was more than a career choice. A natural poet, this young songwriter went to school on Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, and Jack White, among others. His lyrics speak directly to a younger generation that hears, sees, and thinks about the very things he is writing. From their opening song to the finale of their set, the Ben Daniels Band cuts through with their originality, musicianship, and a sound that spans Americana, Blues, Jazz, and Rock.
The son of actor Jeff Daniels he has quietly monitored what it takes to live life as an artist. Beyond a passed down talent, the Ben Daniels Band believes in hard work, perseverance, and creatively challenging themselves and their audience.
With Tommy Reifel on bass, Wesley Fritezmeier on drums/mandolin, and Amanda Daniels on percussion/vocals, Ben Daniels Band’s live show never fails to take over the venue. With five CDs under their belts – Coming From The C, Checkin’ In To The Michigan Inn, Can’t You See, The Mountain Home EP, and their dual album & movie release Old Gold – the Ben Daniels Band has grown to be a formidable group that sounds pleasantly familiar, yet unforgettably unique.
SOLD OUT. Main Stage. Reserved seating. 7:30 p.m.
Dogwood Box Office hours are Tuesday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and two hours prior to an event. For more information please contact Dogwood Box Office at 231.924.8885. You may also purchase tickets from the Dogwood Center Facebook page!
