Greiss is a current member of Egyptian Parliament and Board Chairperson for the Association for the Protection of the Environment. She works with the poor and marginalized Christian community of garbage collectors in Cairo. Her work focuses on environmental protection and the empowerment of women and children.

“Desiring the Kingdom:Â Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation” with James K.A. Smith

James K.A. Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Congregational and Ministry Studies at Calvin College. He describes his work as “undertaken in the borderlands between philosophy, theology, ethics, aesthetics, science, and politics.”
Smith is most interested in bringing critical thought to bear on the practices of the church and the church’s witness to culture. He has written many books, and his presentation will be based on his most recent which was released September 2009.

“The Theology Behind Smart Diplomacy with North Korea” with K.A. (Tony) Namkung

K.A. Namkung is an independent consultant on U.S./Asian relations, North Korea, and nuclear arms and is known and highly respected by business and government leaders throughout Asia and the U.S. He serves as Asian advisor to New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.Â
Namkung has traveled to North Korea nearly thirty times and for this presentation he will use his experience of dealing with North Korea over the past twenty year to reflect on current situations. Also, Namkung is a 1967 Calvin alum.

“The New American Culture War” by Arthur C. Brooks

Speaker Arthur C. Brooks is the newly appointed president of the American Enterprise Institute, former professor of business and government policy at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Dr. Brooks’ research and writing have investigated the connections between culture, politics, and economic life in America.Â
In the past ten years he has published five dozen academic articles, scores of magazine and newspaper essays, and seven books onsubjects ranging from the economics of arts to philanthropy to military operations research. His most recent books are Gross National Happiness, Social Entrepreneurship, and Who Really Cares, which discusses the surprising truth he discovered about compassionate conservatism after years of researching the giving trends in America.

“The Healing of America:Â A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care” with T. R. Reid

T.R. Reid is one of the nation’s best-known correspondents through his coverage of global affairs for The Washington Post, his books and documentaries, and his light-hearted commentaries on National Public Radio. Â Reid has written and hosted documentary films for National Geographic TV, for PBS Frontline, and for the A&E network.Â
He is a regular on national Public Radio’s Morning Edition and he has several books including, The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care, which comes out this summer. During the research for this book Reid went to ten countries to find out why all the other industrialized democracies manage to provide high -quality universal health care but still spend half as much as we do.

February 27 – David Shelby – 7:30 p.m.
Nominated in 2009 for a Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Country Recording and having just signed a production deal with fame Nashville producers Ed Seay and Russ Zavitson, David Shelby is a hot up and coming country performer!
David sings, writes, and performs his material with a lot of heart and total conviction. His songs reflect his love for Nashville, the history of country music, and his gritty “Rock On!” sensibilities. He explains, “I want my music to reflect where I come from. I grew up on equal parts Country, Motown, and Rock.”
Writing from the heart and performing energy packed shows with his band, is quickly becoming his trademark.

Tony Reynolds is a professional singer with a smooth four-octave voice, a classy style and years of experience in the entertainment world. For seven years Tony traveled the world singing back up for famed performer Tom Jones. Tony has also had the privilege of singing back up with Elton John.

Bob Van Stee started playing piano by ear at the age of 7. Some of the bands he has worked with are The New World Singers during the 1960’s, Kenny Gordon & the Sound Gathering and Checkers Morton during the 1970’s,  Turning Point in the 1980’s, and Madhouse in the 1990’s. For the last year he has been a part of the piano vocal duo with Tony Reynolds.Â

March 6 – Borogoves – 7:30 p.m.
The Borogoves are an eclectic folk duo from Howell, Michigan. With influences ranging from blues and jazz to acoustic rock, Danny “Finn” Cheyne and Erin Cheyne have created a strong, organic blend of raw vocals and percussive guitar spiked with a dash of ukulele.
The name “Borogoves” was pulled from the works of Lewis Carroll, whose whimsical style is mirrored in the duo’s lighthearted lyrics.

February 20 – Jimmie Stagger and Kathy Lamar – 7:30 p.m.
An evening not to be missed! Soulful blues with West Michigan’s own Jimmie Stagger, Kathy Lamar, and pianist Bob VanStee. They are sure to provide a vibrant and energetic show!
Jimmie Stagger has a big rich voice and makes you feel his pain and share his joy through his music. His growing list of accomplishments includes receiving the “Jammie” award for “The Triumphant Return of Slim Jim” as the Best Local Blues CD from Grand Rapids WYCE public radio in 2002. As a community leader, Stagger contributes much of his time honoring his commitment to support several charities in the West Michigan area.
LaMar has displayed her vocal talents from Vegas to Shang-hi for the past 20 years. As a background vocalist, she has performed with Gladys Knight, The Four Tops, and Lola Falana.
Her style ranges from Billy Holiday, Nancy Wilson, Anita Baker, Tina Turner, Sade and Ella Fitzgerald with her sultry Jazz, R/B, and Blues sound.  Kathy sings with Ronald McNeir, of the legendary Motown group the Four Tops, on his CD “Ronnie Mac & Companyâ€.Â
With a smoky evocative voice, she has mesmerized audiences and captured the hearts of Jazz and R/B lovers around the globe. She was born and raised in Grand Rapids and is back in Michigan for a short time only!

Pianist and composer Bob Dogan is considered Chicago’s jazz treasure. He is one of the most revered and enigmatic players on the Chicago music scene, having been right at the roots of modern jazz.Â
Bob Dogan has played and recorded with Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Glenn Miller, Louis Bellison, Gordon Brisker and many more. He has taught at Berkely Jazz College in Boston.
The Bob Dogan Trio consists of Dogan on piano, Dan Delorenzo on bass, and Joe Adamik on drums. Their latest cd is “My Blue Roots”, just out Fall 2009.
