September 21 – Fremont John – 7:30 p.m.

July 12, 2013 by Dogwood

fremontjohn“Tampa Bay’s most seasoned and professional original singer/songwriter.” -MusicTampaBay.com
That’s right folks, Fremont John is not from Fremont, Michigan.
A distinctive acoustic guitar style with the resonate growl of a baritone voice is reason enough to listen to the music of Fremont John. Add it to his penchant for taking the classic songs we all know and creating them in his own style and you have a captivating show of musical ability. Developing his musical talents since age 5, he’s played the music of the classical greats to the rock hall of famers and now pen’s his own music with the richness of his life experiences weaving a variety of styles into his own.
As an electric guitar rock-n-roller during his early career, Fremont John toured extensively throughout the Midwest with his band Innervision. Taking a break from regular performance and touring for nearly 25 years, he continued to perform sporadically at venues thoughout Michigan while writing some of the songs that became a part of his first CD, ACOUSTIC THUNDER, released in 1999. That same year Fremont John returned to full time performance, honing a professional music career on the stages of the popular Key West venues. He continues to be a favorite both solo and trio performer at Sloppy Joe’s, The Bull, Vigilio’s and Willy T’s in Key West where he still does a monthly tour.
Record producer Larry Baeder, wowed by FJ’s songwriting, initiated a collaboration with deeply talented seasoned musicians and recording technicians in NYC’s Pyramid Studio in 2004. The 2005 indie CD release of TIMELINE included Richard Crooks (Dr. John, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan) on drums, Fernando Saunders (Lou Reed, Pat Benatar, Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer) on bass, Charlie Giordano (Bruce Springsteen, Pat Benatar) adding keyboard, Crispin Cio (Joe Cocker, Rolling Stones) on sax, with Larry Baeder (James Montgomery, Carly Simon, Apollo Theater House) adding guitar licks. This collaboration resulted in a national radio campaign with airplay in many US cities and global airplay via hundreds of Internet stations. The CD received strong reviews in the industry and continues to enjoy strong sales at live shows and online.
GUITAR SONGS, the first all instrumental effort, was brought on by years of requests from fans for “more guitar!”. The CD features Fremont John’s identifiable melodic and distinctive acoutic style that captivates his live audience. Tampa Bay’s premier online music e-zine, The Bay Buzz (www.thebaybuzz.org) writes, “John’s sound is clean and his acoutic lead tone is wonderful; clear and crisp but also warm.” And then, “If you enjoy melodic guitar, buy this disc. A good instrumental CD is difficult to make but this one (Guitar Songs) is excellent.” -Pete Gallagher, WMNF 88.5 FM, Tampa, FL.
Fremont John’s solo live performance is a relaxed and comfortable way to kick back and enjoy music. Whether it’s a remake of a classic or an original selection, the guitar work is sure to please and the stories surrounding the songs are delightfully entertaining. When backed by a rhythm section for a trio sound it’s sure to be a rocking good time as he incorporates an ‘electric’ sound into his trademark Blue Taylor acoustic guitar. With an uncanny ability to ‘read’ his audience, Fremont John tailors his vast musical selections to the mood of his listeners like a master entertainer.

September 14 – Vincent Hayes – 7:30 p.m.

July 12, 2013 by Dogwood

vincenthayes2013web1Vincent Hayes returns to the Dogwood Center Black Box!!
Nominated by the Blues Foundation for the prestigious 2011 Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut” for their internationally successful debut CD, “Reclamation”, the West Michigan-based group has carved a rapidly growing reputation as one of the favorite roots and blues bands around.
Driven by Hayes dynamic, sensitive guitar work and one of the most powerful rhythm sections in the modern blues industry, the four piece band’s performances are dominated by grooving rhythms, stinging guitar, memorable songs, and lively, show stopping musicianship.
It has been a busy summer for Vincent Hayes. Most recently he and his band (formerly known as The Vincent Hayes Project), were honored with an invitation to warm up the stage for the “King of the Blues” himself, BB King, at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. Just a few weeks later they found themselves in their first official “headliner” slot on a triple bill with blues legend Buddy Guy, and blues/rock hero Jonny Lang at the 2013 Coast West Festival, where they quickly gained the favor of the crowd of 9,000 rock and blues fans.

With a new CD, “The Grind”, just released in late August, Hayes and his stellar rhythm section showcase their evolution as a songwriter and a guitar force to be reckoned with. There are eight new Hayes originals on “The Grind”, in addition to an interpretation of “Inner City Blues”, the 1971 classic by Marvin Gaye, and the moody and dark “Not Tonight”, a collaborative song penned by West Michigan singer/songwriter Joel Toppen, and arranged by Hayes and the band.

In February 2011, Vincent and the band swept the WYCE Jammie Awards by winning four Jammies in the categories of “Album of the Year, Best Blues Album, Best New Artist, and Producer of the Year (Glenn Brown)”, before receiving two 2011 Blues Blast Award Nominations for “Best New Artist and the Sean Costello Rising Star Award.”  The CD “Reclamation was” additionally voted as one of the top 100 Blues CD’s of 2010-2011 by Real Blues magazine, and Vincent also appeared on the cover of the March 2012 issue of France’s Blues & Co. magazine

June 7, 2013 by Dogwood

waterwalklogo2Waterwalk, the award winning father/son bonding picture shot on location in Newaygo and Muskegon counties is the perfect summer film. Shown during the week of U.S. Canoe Association Canoe and Kayak Nationals on the Muskegon River, this must see film tells the story of Steve and Justin Faulker’s attempt to become the first team to paddle the Marquette/Joliet discovery route of the Mississippi. Join producer Roger Rapoport and officials from the nationals for a behind the scenes look at this remarkable story filmed on the same river that is the heart of the exciting marathon championships.
Filmed in western and northern Michigan, along Lake Michigan, Green Bay, the Fox, Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, Waterwalk is the story of a suddenly unemployed workaholic dad who takes a dangerous 1,000 canoe trip with the Asian American adopted son he barely knows. Featuring Robert Cicchini (Godfather III, War of the Worlds, The Sopranos and Mentalist) and Chase Maser, the film has been hailed by critics as “heartfelt, touching, and real”. Cinematographer Bruce Schermer shot Sundance Grand Prize Winning Chameleon Street. Don’t miss the preshow talk that offers facinating insights on the Marquette/Joliet story, the Faulkners Odyssey and the big Muskegon River race.

July 26 – The String Doctors – 7:30 p.m.

May 9, 2013 by Dogwood

stringdoctorsThe String Doctors is a new group with a few very familiar faces. Joel Mabus leads the group in so many ways. His superb songwriting and savvy stage presence bring unexpected banter and newborn songs to center stage and the Doctors rhythms bring out the guitar and mandolin abilities of this great virtuoso. Ray Kamalay is the crooner and jokester. His “city mouse” lets the boys stretch on old swing material, both sweet and hot. His sparkling guitar lends both hot solos and luscious chords. As such, Mabus and Kamalay have ranged from the States to Canada and Europe to play some of the most prestigious festivals, including Edinburgh, Vancouver, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Peter Knupfer, on fiddle, has been a popular freelance and session fiddler wherever he has lived. In the past he has worked extensively with Grass Food Lodging and Beats Workin’ with Don Stiernberg. He has won fiddle championships in Wisconsin and Kansas and recorded eight folk and bluegrass album projects, appearing onstage with Bryon Berline, Tony Trischka, Tim O’Brien, Peter Ostroushko, and Howard Levy. His swinging, bluesy fiddle style will have you leavin’ your seat and tappin’ your feet. Dave Hay brings up the bottom on bass. A long-time associate of Ray’s, Dave studied at the Berkley School of Music in Boston. He is a “triple threat”, an accomplished pianist and drummer, as well as bass player. His luscious low tones frame this music with beauty and grace.

Together the four are The String Doctors, who bring a new kind of country swing to your lives, for your dancing and listening pleasure…..and their “Michigan” humor will make you laugh too.

August 17 – Hot Club of Detroit – 7:30 p.m.

May 9, 2013 by Dogwood

hot_club_of_detroit_pr1406_3guys_byannawebber_2012

A jazz ensemble specializing in the Gypsy jazz sound made famous by guitarist Django Reinhardt, the Hot Club of Detroit was formed in 2001 by Reinhardt disciple and virtuoso guitarist Evan Perri while he was attending Wayne State University. The group quickly became a favorite in area bars and clubs and signed with Mack Avenue Records, releasing the self-titled Hot Club of Detroit in 2006 to much acclaim, following it with Night Town in 2008. It’s About That Time which expanded somewhat on the band’s Gypsy jazz base to include other strains of jazz appeared in 2010. In 2012, the Hot Club of Detroit returned with Junction displaying an electrifying and visionary ensemble that takes the traditions pioneered by Reinhardt and spins them in a way that’s both reverent and refreshingly contemporary. Their energetic and unique acoustic-electric sound features Evan Perri on lead guitar, Julien Labro on accordion, Paul Brady on rhythm guitar, and Jeff Pedraz on bass.

August 23 – Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys – 7:30 p.m.

May 8, 2013 by Dogwood

lindsaylouwebYoung “rootsgrass” band Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys has jumped into the forefront of today’s progressive roots music movement. Distinct vocals, tight harmonies, instrumental expertise, and creative arrangements are all essential characteristics of their unique sound. Instrumentally, they can turn on a dime, their arrangements showing a well-developed taste in music – based on bluegrass traditions but frequently dipping into swing jazz and popular song craft – and their sound is deftly guided by the clarion vocals of lead singer Lindsay Lou.
Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys’ new album, Release Your Shrouds, marks a remarkable step forward and that’s thanks in part to the relationship between Lindsay Lou and Joshua Rilko, which blossomed in their college days and, with their recent marriage, now forms the core of the band. Joshua plays mandolin and joins his voice with Lindsay in beautiful harmony on the new album which is a window to a bluegrass band spreading its wings and incorporating new influences into their sound. On “Wonderful You Are”, bass player Spencer Cain shines in a duet with Lindsay’s Billie Holiday-like vocals, and dobro player Mark Lavengood brings the fire on “Lemon Squeezy.” Keith Billick’s banjo playing not only offers the driving bluegrass sound, but also brings a level of sophistication to the less traditional numbers, like instrumental track “Barbarossa”. Lindsay Lou’s songs are fully crafted stories, often based on real-life experiences, with lovely hooks and choruses. The breadth of the songs’ themes pushes each band member to work outside the bluegrass box and the results are delightful. Like any family, Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys are more than the sum of their parts. They’re an all-American family, front-porch pickin’ party, with each song shining with the polish of handmade homemade acoustic roots music.
