E.B. White’s beloved children’s tale is brought to life in this production, which finds the young farm pig Wilbur attempting to avoid a dire fate. Of all the barnyard creatures, Wilbur’s staunchest ally is Charlotte, a thoughtful spider who devises an intriguing plan to keep the gentle little swine out of the slaughterhouse. February 12 – Goodnight Moon & The Runaway Bunny – 7:30 p.m.

December 2, 2015 by Dogwood

goodnight-moonMermaid Theatre has earned international acclaim for its unique interpretations of the works of Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar ), Leo Lionni (Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch) and Sam McBratney (Guess How Much I Love You). These widely-travelled productions incorporate innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects, and evocative original music to provide very young audiences with an effortless introduction to the performing arts and the excitement of reading. Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny features these same elements.

Few writers have been as attuned to the concerns and emotions of childhood as Margaret Wise Brown (1910–1952). Brown, a former teacher, believed that very young children could be fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them. Few had previously attempted to write specifically for children aged two to five, and Brown created some of the most enduring and beloved children’s books of all time as well as developed the concept of the first durable board book.
the-runaway-bunny-15Clement Hurd (1908–1988) graduated from Yale University and studied painting in Paris in the 1930s with Fernand Léger and others. His engaging semi-abstract style became world-famous with the publication in 1942 of The Runaway Bunny and Goodnight Moon in 1947 – collaborations with Brown that became two of the 20th Century’s best-known children’s books.

Goodnight Moon
is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while The Runaway Bunny’s pretend tale of leaving home evokes reassuring responses from his loving mum. Both tales feature endearing rabbit characters, and the soothing rhythms of bunny banter and dream-like imagery never fail to infuse young readers with a reassuring sense of security. Mermaid’s staged adaptation will bring a new sense of appreciation to stories that have delighted several generations.
This is a one hour performance with no intermission. Kids are welcome to come in their favorite pajama’s and enjoy the show!

January 23 – Another Round – 7:30 p.m.

December 1, 2015 by Dogwood

anotherround1

You can expect a pitch perfect performance when Another Round, Indiana University’s all-male a cappella group, performs on January 23 at the Dogwood Center! The group, whose performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., was originally known as Straight No Chaser back in 1996 when the group originated. A night with the group will leave you with a tune in your head and a smile on your face.

A cappella singing has been incredibly popular lately thanks to movies like “Pitch Perfect”. Major movements in modern a cappella over the past century include Barbershop and doo wop. Some a cappella groups use their voices to emulate instruments; others are more traditional and focus on harmonizing.

Ten male students founded Straight No Chaser in 1996 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. In April 2006, a 1998 video recording of “The 12 Days of Christmas” was posted on YouTube. Straight No Chaser added humorous touches, and more than 16 million people tuned in. In April 2012, the collegiate group changed its name to Another Round, and the legacy continues.

The singers provide their audience with not only a wide variety of music but charming and funny personalities to enjoy.
