October 28 – Dance Lessons – "Polka" – 7:00 p.m.

Come take dance lessons from Brad Smith!  Learn new steps, perfect ones learned before and have fun!
The fourth of four sessions being offered during the month, the October 28 lesson will be “Polka”. 
The Polka, coming from Bohemia in the 1800’s, has an unforgettable rhythm – da-da-dum, da-da-dum.  The name is Czech for “half-step”, much used in the dance.  The Polka is danced in pairs either face to face or standing side by side.  Polka music has a 2/4 beat and is notable for its happy sound.  The Polka is a very popular dance worldwide.
Lessons being offered at the Dogwood Center include “Swing” on October 7, “Waltz” and “Cha Cha” on October 14, “Foxtrot” and “Rumba” on October 21, and “Polka” on October 28.  Sign up for one evening of lessons, several, or all four nights!  Show off your new skills at the Otsego Jazz Ensemble concert at the Dogwood on October 30 and dance the night away!
The class will be from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Dogwood Black Box.  Pre-registration is greatly appreciated.  Register today by calling the Dogwood Box Office at 231.924.8885!

The thrid of four sessions being offered during the month, the October 21 lesson will be “Foxtrot” and “Rumba”. 
Today, the “Foxtrot” has evolved into a dance of social elegance, characterized by smooth, graceful and gliding movements and enjoyed by people of all ages.  Dancers travel around the perimeter of the floor in a counterclockwise direction in a basic rhythm of slow-slow-quick-quick.  The dance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the Foxtrot is still a true American favorite.
The “Rumba” is the most famous Latin American dance to gain popularity in North America.  Slow and romantic, the Rumba is the most sensual of Latin dances.

October 14 – Dance Lessons – "Waltz" and "Cha Cha" – 7:00 p.m.

Come take dance lessons from Brad Smith!  Learn new steps, perfect ones learned before and have fun!
The second of four sessions being offered during the month, the October 14 lesson will be “Waltz” and “Cha Cha”.  This class will be held at NCRESA, the building directly across the parking lot from the Dogwood Center.  This location is for this class only.  All other dance lessons are held at the Dogwood Center.
The “Waltz” is one of the most popular of all dances.  It is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and rise and fall.  Graceful and elegant, Waltz dancers glide around the floor almost effortlessly.  With its easy-to-hear 1-2-3, 1-2-3 rhythm pattern and simple box step foundation pattern, it’s also easy to learn.
The “Cha Cha” is extraordinarily popular with old and young alike.  This dance has wide application because Cha Cha music is popular in all music genres, including country, funk, and hip-hop.  This is a party Dance!  The interpretation of Cha Cha music is a happy, carefree, party-time dance expression.

One of four sessions being offered during the month, the October 7 lesson will be “Swing”.  Swing is an easy, intuitive, and not terribly structured dance moves.  The style fits perfectly with jukebox swing tunes.  Dance swingimagepatterns move smoothly either forward/back or side to side while circling freely around the floor.  Danced to a wide variety of music, you can “swing” to almost anything!

September 25 – Classic Film "To Catch a Thief"- 7:30 p.m.

Join us for the classic film “To Catch a Thief” starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly!  This 1955 film, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is based on a novel by David Dodge.  It tells a story of retired jewel thief, John Robieto-catch-a-thief (Cary Grant), living a blameless life on the French Riviera.  When a series of jewel robberies begin to take place on the Riviera, Robie is the natural suspect.
Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, seemingly the perfect couple, provide a great mischievious love story that is quite unique. 
“To Catch a Thief” is not rated (NR) and runs 106 minutes.
Tickets: Admission is free.  Donations accepted at the door to benefit the programs of the Dogwood Center.  These contributions will be matched $1/$1 by the Fremont Area Community Foundation.  Main Stage.  7:30 p.m.

October 16 – Drew Nelson – 7:30 p.m.

Drew Nelson will be performing on October 16 in the Black Box!  Musicians Mark Schrock and Drew Howard will accompany Drew.  This will be a fantastic evening!  Put this one on your calendar today!
2010 has been a big year for singer/songwriter Drew Nelson of Grand drewnelsonRapids.  In February, Nelson was honored with the WYCE-FM Jammie Awards for “Album of the Year” for his Dusty Road to Beulah Land CD and Song of the Year for his song “Waiting for the Sun”.  In January, the Grand Rapids Press selected his CD for “Local Spin of the Year”.
Drew has performed at The Ark, Wheatland Music Festival, Bliss Fest Concert Series, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Connections Festival, Trinity House Theatre, Porcupine Mountains Music Festival, TriCentric Showcase Artist North East Folk Alliance to name a few.  In September 2010, he will be performing throughout England!  drewnelson2
Nelson is now expanding his love of music to the creation of the instruments he plays.  He hopes to start a tradition of building and signing one a year to auction off for charity.  In addition to giving back to us through his music, Nelson is involved in many community-based efforts to educate the next generation and make our world a better place to live.

November 6 – Bill Bynum & Co. – 7:30 p.m.

Come enjoy Bill Bynum & Co. in the Black Box on November 6!  bynum
With songs both traditional and original, and a sound that’s at once as comfortable as old jeans and as fresh as a new blade of grass, Bill Bynum & Co. is a band that’s easy to love and hard to quit.  The band’s core of guitar, Dobro, fiddle, bass and harmony vocals can lean into bluegrass, veer toward country, or take listeners on a unique journey through Bill’s original songs.
Bill is a first-prize winner in the Metro Detroit Songwriting Showcase with his song “Lovin’ You.”  billbynum2He has collaborated with bluegrass legend Pete Goble, an International Bluegrass Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award winner.  Bill lives for the joy of entertaining his audiences.  A true showman!
Bynum’s group members come from diverse backgrounds.  Bass player billbynumChuck Anderson has a physics background and served as a sound technician for The Ark in Ann Arbor.  Dave Keeney, guitar/Dobro player, is a former long-haul trucker.  And Mary Seelhorst, fiddler/vocalist, is a former Popular Mechanics writer.  With all of their different experiences….this mix of people is great!

October 23 – Braunschweiger Blues Band – 7:30 p.m.

A local favorite band at the Dogwood, Doug Harmon and the other musicians love to have FUN!  Come join us for a great evening at the Dogwood!  bbb-2010
Band members include:  John Chandonnet on drums and vocals; Todd Juengel on guitar, keyboard and vocals; Wade Perkins on horns, keyboard and vocals; Randy Seabolt on bass and vocals; Doug Harmon on guitar and vocals; and Cousin Richie on vocals and sound technician.
Food and drinks available beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Tickets are $15 and will include a pork barbeque sandwich and Richie’s Fries!  Band begins at 7:30 p.m.

August 11 – "Satellite Empire" – 7:30 p.m.

“Satellite” is an original ballet choreographed by Troy Schumacher of the New York City Ballet with musical direction by Nick Jaina and Nathan Lanston of Hush Records, Portland and performance by dancers of the Newsatellite-dancers York City Ballet.  This is a ballet with historical sweep and beauty – a story of love through war and time of crisis.  It is set in an age of decadence.
This new work is set to an epic poem by Kevin Draper with photography by Lora Robertson of Leica Master Photographers.
“Satellite” is an original work of collaboration programmed by Satellite Gallery Arts Retreat and the Dogwood Center.  The work is a product of coast to coast collaboration.  The ballet has geometric sweep and beauty and is a story of love in crisis in an age of war and decadence.
satellite-graphicsSchumacher’s choreeography is precise and compels with moments of poetic beauty.  Digital stage settings hold the dancers and audience in an atmosphere of surprising boldness and Jaina’s musical ensemble of piano, violin and viola traces an emotional arc that grips the imagination.  nick-jaina1
The evening will also include performance of excerpts of Balanchine’s “AGON”, courtesy of the Balanchine Trust, and from recent work by Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martens of the New York City Ballet.
