Che Apalache was formed to enjoy music, to honor it, and to bridge the gap between North and South America, creating a vision of a truly “American” music. This four-man string band is based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina, Mexico and the United States. Che Apalache began as a bluegrass band, but eventually incorporated Latin American styles into their repetoir. Combining instrumental prowess with tight vocal harmonies, they have curated an authentic blend of genres to reflect the nature of their lives. Evoking images from Appalachia to the Andes, their affectionately titled debut album, “Latingrass” is testament to a powerful cultural and musical exchange.

Rolling Stone magazine called him “the preeminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement.”  John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer-songwriter of the 80’s folk scene.  Since his 1987 Red House release, I Know, the Minnesota-via-New Jersey guitarist and songwriter’s wit and honesty has made him one of the most respected, beloved songwriters currently carrying on the folk tradition.

Many well-known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, eTown Hall and has appeared on CNN. His song “Where No Monuments Stand” is featured in the upcoming documentary Every War Has Two Losers, about activist Poet Laureate William Stafford (1914-1993).

Stemming from the Lomax Project, Jayme Stone’s Folklife treats old field recordings not as time capsules, but as heirloom seeds passed down from a bygone generation. Planting these sturdy seeds in modern soil, this versatile gathering of musicians has cultivated vibrant Sea Island spirituals, Creole calypsos, and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes for contemporary listeners. Their concerts are moving, inventive, and participatory experiences that prove folk songs are indeed perennials for the people.

Occidental Gypsy (“OG”) has played to packed houses at the legendary Nighttown in Cleveland, Green Mill in Chicago, Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, World Cafe Live, Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, The Ark in Ann Arbor, the Blue Wisp in Cincinnati and many others.
Occidental Gypsy has shared the stage with greats like Rikki Lee Jones, Jorma Kaukenen, Stanley Jordan, Joe Sample, and David Bromberg, who also said, “These guys have great singing, fantastic guitar and violin work, and high energy originals that leave the crowd crazy. An awesome band.”
Hailing from Pittsburgh, Jeremy studies extensively with legendary jazz guitarist Joe Negri. His background and performance history includes powerful jazz guitar with sultry and smooth vocals reminiscent of the bygone era of swing.  Jeremy is the most recent addition to the band, and brings a straight-ahead jazz sensibility and tight playing that serves as a fantastic counterpoint to the wildly driving gypsy rhythms.
Well known as capable heirs and nouveau pioneers of the music of Django Reinhardt, Occidental Gypsy has been featured the biggest DjangoFests in the US. Band members have also participated in side projects that have brought them around the world alongside legends, like the 25 year old Eli Bishop who has played with Wynton Marsalis, and regularly performs at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The band features Eli Bishop, a Nashville prodigy who recently won 1st Place in the Mississippi Fiddle Championships. Bishop stuns crowds with his lightning-fast and emotional violin.  Lead guitarist and composer Brett Feldman drives the sound with masterful gypsy swing guitar.  Jeremy Frantz – a protege of legendary jazz guitarist Joe Negri- brings his sultry, “retro” vocals and expert jazz guitar to the front line, and serves as an exquisite counterpoint to the down-and-dirty driving sound brought by Brett.  Percussionist Jon Chapman and bassist Jeff Feldman fill out the band’s rich sound and keep crowds moving with beats and complex rhythms that make their audience keep coming back for more.
Occidental Gypsy’s sound is appealing to a wide spectrum of people, and their shows consistently attract enthusiastic audiences at colleges, arts centers, festivals, concert halls and clubs. Their fans include musicians who enjoy the sophisticated compositions and masterful play, but most folks just come to enjoy the music and dance.  The band has found a unique beat and brings to every show a dynamic mix of original vocal and instrumental pieces- and a few memorable standards- in fun, exhilarating performances.  Occidental Gypsy’s music cannot be easily classified; a bit of jazz, a catchy strain of blues, a seismic swing experience, and “a whole lotta’ gypsified groove…”

Carlene Carter has been releasing music for almost four decades. The daughter of June Carter Cash and country star Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, she is the physical embodiment of the Carter Family in the 21^st century.

Her most recently album release was Carter Girl, a Don Was-produced collection of Carter Family songs and originals, inspired by her family.  Carlene spent the better part of the last few years on the road with John Mellencamp on his Plain Spoken tour, both as a support act and joining him on stage nightly to perform duets.  She also played a role in the touring production of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the southern gothic musical play written by Stephen King and Mellencamp. Upcoming is the release of Sad Clowns and Hillbillies, the 2017 album by John Mellencamp featuring Carlene Carter and includes newly penned songs by Carlene.
Carlene started her career singing with The Carter Family at 17. With the 1978 release of her self-titled debut album, she established herself on the edgier end of the country music spectrum, having recorded it in England with Graham Parker’s band The Rumour. When Maybelle Carter died later that fall, Chet Flippo wrote in Rolling Stone that she “lived to see her granddaughter Carlene merge Nashville with contemporary rock and roll.”

More recently, she’s been touring with John Mellencamp following her appearance in the road company of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the musical play he wrote with author Stephen King.  That collaboration led to a new joint effort Sad Clowns & Hillbiliies.  She duets with Mellencamp on the album, sings backup and plays guitar and autoharp. Her songwriting skills are heard on “Indigo Sunset” which she wrote with Mellencamp and on Damascus Road,” her own composition.

Michigan-born, Navy veteran, Drew Nelson is a storytelling songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. A fly fisherman and world traveler, he writes as a witness to the lives and journeys of those he has met along the way, mixing Americana and roots-rock with traditional folk styles. Drew has toured across North America and Europe, performing solo and opening for popular rock artists like Melissa Etheridge and Edwin McCain as well as esteemed folk singers like Josh White Jr. and John Gorka.

Bob Milne is a world renowned “Boogie-Woogie” ragtime pianist who has performed in Japan and Ireland. Bob has been recorded by the Library of Congress, played at Bill Gates’ private club in Palm Springs, and for the past president George Bush. Bob is regarded as an American Treasure. As a recording artist, he has produced ten collections of solo piano rags, blues, boogies and folk/traditional tunes, and has written a Concerto for Orchestra and Ragtime Piano. The Library of Congress has collected memorabilia and made a film of a day in his life to be stored for posterity as part of the American Music Project.

The Dogwood Summer Youth Theater will present The Adventures of Tom Sawyer!
Tom Sawyer, a mischievous boy, lives with his Aunt Polly in a Mississippi River town and spends most of his time getting in and out of trouble. After playing hooky from school, Aunt Polly makes Tom whitewash the fence as punishment, but Tom cleverly persuades his friends to do the work for him. Looking for adventure, Tom and Huckleberry Finn run away to become pirates, but when they discover the townspeople think they have drowned, they make guest appearances at their own funerals. However, Tom and Huckleberry Finn discover the dark side of their town when they go to the graveyard one night and witness the murder of Dr. Robinson. When they find out Muff Potter has been framed for the murder, they must decide whether to risk their lives to save his. All the wit, charm, and humor of the novel is preserved in this enchanting comedy that is suitable for all ages. Adapted by Doug Goheen from the novel by Mark Twain.
The Dogwood Summer Youth Theater will be directed again by Chelsea and Casey Webb. Auditions were held on May 5 and 7 for interested youth ages 12 and up.
