Ahmanson is a writer and a philanthropist whose public activities are focused on deepening awareness and understanding of the role of religion in public life, the importance of knowing history to understand the present, and the vital roles the arts play in shaping human experience. She is chairman of the board of the Museum of Biblical Art in New York City, a regular speaker at the International Arts Movement’s annual encounters, and a frequent commentator on the arts. She has sponsored a number of international art exhibitions, the most recent being “The Sacred Made Real” at the National Galleries in London and Washington DC. She and husband, Howard, are trustees of the private philanthropy Fieldstead and Company. Most recently, Ahmanson was Visionary-in-Residence for Biola University’s Year of the Arts, 2011-2012. Ahmanson is a Calvin Alum who will return to share her passion for the world of art.

WuDunn is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and co-author of three best-selling books. The most recent is Half the Sky, about the challenges facing women around the globe. It has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Colbert Report, and other network television shows and will be featured as a four-hour PBS primetime national and international broadcast event this October. WuDunn lectures to a wide range of American and global audiences and has been invited to speak to the secretary general of the United Nations, former vice president Al Gore, and other senior officials on economic, political, and social topics related to women in the developing world, the global economy, China, and the emerging markets. In 2011, Newsweekcited WuDunn as one of the “150 Women Who Shake the World.”

If performing heart surgery isn’t difficult enough, try doing it in the war-torn country of Irag. Jeremy Courtney is the executive director of Preemptive Love Coalition, a non-profit that provides medical training for Iraqi physicians and heart surgeries for children in Iraq. He makes a compelling case for extending a helping hand first and asking questions later. In the process of mending hearts, he is mending cultural discord, unmaking violence, and living out the call of Jesus to be a peacemaker.

For Elisabeth von Trapp, the sounds of music are part of her earliest memories. Born and raised in Vermont, Elisabeth is the granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired The Sound of Music. Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center.

The Empire Brass enjoys an international reputation as North America’s finest brass quintet, renowned for its brilliant virtuosity and unparalleled diversity of its repertoire. The five musicians – all of whom have held leading positions with major American orchestras – perform over 100 concerts a year in cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, London, Zurich, and Tokyo. With their best-selling recordings on the Telarc label they have introduced an even larger audience worldwide to the excitement of brass music, ranging from Bach and Handel to jazz and Broadway. They are equally at home in the majestically antiphonal works that Gabrieli composed for St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice and the exuberant show-stopping tunes that Richard Rodgers and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote for the Broadway stage.

With a voice that critics have called “hauntingly clear” (New York Times), Elisabeth, along with the Empire Brass, “…will send a thrill of pleasure through your nervous system” (Boston Globe).

The highlight of the evening is a wonderful medley from The Sound of Music, wherein the guitar solo Edelweiss flows into an extraordinary rendition of Stille Nacht.

West Michigan’s two newest orchestras, the Shoreline Symphony and the Newaygo County Community Orchestra, will present a joint performance on Sunday, November 25 at 3:00 p.m. on the Main Stage.  Highlights will include Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, and familiar and much-loved works by J.S. Bach, Bela Bartok, and Maurice Ravel.  The concert is free of charge.
The Shoreline Symphony, established in September 2012, is celebrating its first season of creating quality classical music for Muskegon and Newaygo County audiences.  Led by founding director S. Annette Jurcevic, the Shoreline Symphony brings together professional and amateur musicians who play alongside students and faculty from several area colleges and universities.  It is the only all-volunteer orchestra in the Muskegon area to include woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings.
The Newaygo County Community Orchestra, a string orchestra established in February 2012, is in its second season of rehearsing and performing in Newaygo County.  Founding director Lucy Spinner leads orchestra rehearsals.  Members include musicians of all ages and from a variety of musical backgrounds.  NC Community Orchestra specializes in adaptations of popular classical works.
Conductor Annette Jurcevic will direct musicians from both orchestras in the joint performance.  Jurcevic is a recent transplant to West Michigan from Austin, Texas, where she directed the Austin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Austin Summer Pops Orchestra, and the St. Edward’s University Orchestra.  She currently conducts Shoreline Symphony, the West Shore Chorus, and the Muskegon Shoreline Chorus.
