Lucas Wilson’s blood is sound. His veins are guitar strings and his heart is a kick drum. Beating. Steady. Sound.
For over a decade, Wilson has ground out a life on stage, growing and evolving into one of Michigan’s proudest roots-based rockers. His former and widely celebrated project, Sweet Japonic, won three WYCE Jammie Awards for Best Rock Album – first in 2005 for the monster LP Through the Eyes of Lucie Blue, then again in 2006 for Two O’clock Sirens, and yet again in 2009 for Where My Devils Go. The band’s live energy and hooking, pop-funk vibe caught the eyes and ears of Coca-Cola and Paste Magazine who named them one of 40 international up-and-coming bands and featured them as a part of their For the Love of Music campaign.
After stepping out on his own in 2010, Wilson’s debut solo album, a seven song self-titled, earned four 2013 Jammie nominations, winning the Special Jury Prize for Best New Artist. In it, Lucas is laid bare before all. The project chronicles Wilson’s artistic coming of age, from the Japonic split, through fear, addiction, and self-doubt, past the pain to very new and euphoric Lucas Wilson – a man found on his own creation. It’s emotive and evocative, hopeful and heart breaking, with genuine searing realness. As comfortable on stage at Rothbury as he is in the corner of a hole-in-the-wall bar with a stool and an acoustic guitar, Lucas has always been quiet and unassuming, giving others the latitude to draw their own conclusions. He welcomes comparisons, such as Ray Lamontagne (everyone), Joe Cocker (baby boomers), Sam Cooke (soul seekers), and John Mayer (millennium kids).

Led by dynamic, energetic front woman and multi-instrumental Erin Zindle, The Ragbirds utilize an arsenal of instruments from around the world. The Ragbirds are a fusion of folk rock and pop hooks over danceable world rhythms stirred with a Celtic fiddler’s bow.

Surrounding Zindle’s earthy-sweet voice is the whirlwind of guitarist T.J. Zindle and dynamic bassist Brian Crist, spinning over the world-beat grooves of drummer Loren Kranz and percussionist Randall Moore. Zindle skillfully switches between violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion, and percussion, all while dancing around the stage, drawing the awe of audiences across the country.
The Ragbirds albums have received local and national praise, hailed “Highly impressive” by USA Today and touted as “Astounding international eclecticism” by Reveal Arts. The Ragbirds were formed in 2005 with the release of Yes Nearby. 2007’s world-travel themed Wanderlove was Homegrown Music Network’s #1 selling album in the fall of 2008. The 2009 international release of Finally Almost Ready saw the band invade Japan with the single “Book of Matches” reaching #1 on the charts in Osaka. In 2010, The Ragbirds reached yet another milestone in their young careers when they independently marketed and sold their 10,000th album.
The Ragbirds have performed in over 30 states to a tune of 150+ shows a year. Crisscrossing the nation in their converted diesel bus that runs on recycled waste vegetable oil, these festival favorites have performed at Rothbury, 10,000 Lakes, Summer Camp, Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Hookahville, and more, and have shared the stage with Rusted Root, Railroad Earth, Toubab Krewe, Hot Buttered Rum, The Duhks, and many others.

Ustad Shafaat Khan, world-renowned Indian Classical musician, son of Ustad Imrat Khan and nephew of Ustad Vilayat Khan, has enthralled audiences worldwide at many prestigious concert halls, music festivals, and universities all over India, American, Europe, China, Russia, and Japan. Recently, he performed with Stevie Wonder at one of the biggest festivals in the US, The Bonnaroo Festival. In the past, he’s shared a television concert with Ray Charles in Germany. In addition, some of his CD’shave been produced by the famous Dr. Deepak Chopra. His unique concert presentation includes Indian classical/folk music on Sitar, Tabla, and vocal with Sufi inspired compositions and a multicultural fusion of Eastern and Western music.

The Grand Rapids Accordion Ensemble was founded in early 1991 by Ray Tomaszewski, a talented accordionist whose aim was the promotion and preservation of quality accordion learning and performance. With Dr. Jon Nichols as conductor, the 42 member ensemble meets for rehearsal each week and is in great demand of area performances!

The program for the evening will include patriotic and well known marches and polkas plus much, much more! Come out for a great evening with favorites like Edelweiss from Sound of Music and selections from My Fair Lady.

An evening of original, bluegrass, and acoustic swing that is sure to be a fun night out!
The Journeymen is a trio of hand-selected super-pickers from Michigan and Oregon. The band started in 2009 and tours from the Mid-West to the West coast. On guitar and banjo is Luke Gitchel. Luke has previously found fame on the stage of Dolly Parton’s amusement park, Dixie Stampede, where he played for thousands of tourists each day in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. On mandolin, Brian Oberlin travels the world as a mandolinist with several different bands and orchestras. His is also the founder of the River of the West Mandolin Camp and the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra. Seth Sutton plays the stand-up bass and is the leader of Michigan’s premier swing band, The Midnight Cattle Callers.
The Journeymen play a selection of original swing and bluegrass while adding three part harmonies in a moments notice. From swinging out on a Bob Wills tune on their electric instruments, they will easily switch gears and blast out a barn burner bluegrass tune on their acoustic instruments. They are the winners of the 2011 Tygh Valley Bluegrass Band Concert in Oregon. Don’t miss what’ sure to be a great night out at the Dogwood!

The Rhythm Society Orchestra is a 15 piece dance band specializing in true vintage swing music. Their sound is heavily influenced by Count Basie and Harry James. Although based in Detroit, this band covers top venues throughout the Midwest and has been featured on numerous television and radio programs.

Crooner Paul King describes his style as “a mixture of Mel Torme, Joe Williams, and Frank Sinatra – with a dash of Cab Calloway thrown in”. Detroit’s Metro Times jokes, “his voice has been banned in some nightclubs for inducing public displays of affection on the dance floor”.
The Rhythm Society Orchestra was recently featured in a Michigan-made independent film, Forever in Time, directed by Chuck Grady.
Backed by the solid, horn-heavy sounds of the swingin’ Rhythm Society, handsome front man Paul King belts out the tunes in vintage suave style. In an instant, you’ll be transported into the dance halls of the ’30’s and ’40’s, where a cool-suited cat grabs the hand of the nearest full-skirted honey and the dance-floor crowd parts to watch them take a manic dip and twirl.

Discover the Big Top Within….Cirque Amongus, a one-day Circus Camp will introduce children, ages 6- 12 years old, to a range of circus skills.  There will definitely be an abundance of fun as participants laugh and giggle while they ride unicycles and tiny bikes, walk a tightrope or with stilts, jump rope, do magic tricks, stay atop a rolling barrel, swing on a trapeze, or learn to juggle.
In the morning, students will learn each of the 10 different circus acts.  After lunch, they chose their favorite and spend the afternoon perfecting it and putting together an act with other participants, assisted by Cirque Amongus instructors and volunteers.  At the end of the day, when their families come back, the whole troupe puts on a show with their newly found skills.
The daylong program by Cirque Amongus, a Livonia company that brings all the equipment and instructors for “Circus Day”, will promote teamwork, self-esteem and fun throughout the day.

Come and explore the world of circus arts in Circus J.A.M.M.S! You’ll get the opportunity to learn a variety of skills in Juggling, Acrobatics of balance and agility, Mime, and More Stuff. The more stuff will be the optional opportunity to show off your new skills on the Dogwood Center Main Stage later that evening as part of the Vaudeville Show!!

Mat will engage and educate youth ages 8-13 with his gift for comedy and silent acting reminiscent of great mimes and physical comedians like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Red Skelton. Mat will show participants how to mime; toss, balance, and spin a variety of objects; and strengthen concentration, balance, and agility skills. His workshops are filled with enthusiasm, energy and lots and lots of fun!

An Dro is a union of four seasoned instrumentalists who speak from the heart with uncommon synergy. Their music is a blend of traditional and original melodies from across the globe, reaching back to the past, with an eye to the present and the future.

An Dro takes you on an adventure that is both personal and universal. You’ll hear traditional Irish melodies, medieval French songs, Breton dance tunes, Scandinavian refrains, Appalachian influences, Arabic rhythms, and African grooves all performed with joy and freshness. This is dance music but it’s also listening music.
The band’s original works have a feel that is both ancient and modern with a dynamic range that takes you from crazy dance grooves to delicately orchestrated waltzes and airs to blazing improvisational assaults.
The band takes their name An Dro from a folk dance of Brittany where the dancers link fingers as they move in a spiral line dance. An Dro translates literally as “The Turn” and is an apt description of music that is alive and ever changing.
Band members include: Jim Spalink (Bouzouki, Hurdy Gurdy, Whistles, Recorder), Fred Willson (Guitar, Mandolin), Michele Venegas (Fiddle), Carolyn Koebel on all things percussion.
