“Thelonius Monk: Straight No Chaser” is a unique cinematic portrait of one of the most extraordinary individuals in the history of jazz. Produced by Clint Eastwood, the film is built around documentary footage, shot in the late 
1960’s of the great Black pianist and composer Thelonius Monk. Combining this footage with newly filmed interviews of relatives, associates and friends, the film sheds further light on Monk’s unique genius providing us with a never-before-seen look at the extraordinary work of this one-of-a-kind musical revolutionary.
Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer considered “one of the giants of American music”. Monk had a unique improvisionational style and made 
numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire. He is the second most recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington, which is particularly remarkable as Ellington composed over 1,000 songs while Monk wrote about 70.
Monk’s compositions and improvisations are full of dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists, and are consistent with Monk’s unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of silences and hesitations.
