June 12 – Dave Bennett's Sextet "A Tribute to Benny Goodman" – 7:30 p.m.

March 20, 2015 by Dogwood

davebennettbennygoodmanMichigan clarinetist Dave Bennett, is an authentic musical prodigy (totally self-taught) who brings to life the classic sound and music of Benny Goodman (1909-1986) with incredible technique, style, beauty of tone and naturalness. Dave Bennett began touring his Tribute to Benny Goodman combo in 2005 and has now performed in over thirty-five US States and Canada and has appeared with over thirty orchestras for “pops” shows. Dave made his Carnegie Hall debut on Nov. 1 2013, featured with The New York Pops, Steve Reineke, conducting.

Many Goodman hits are in the program: Moonglow, I Got Rhythm, Sing Sing Sing, Airmail Special, Poor Butterfly, Let’s Dance and other classics. Bennett’s mature stage presence, knowledge of the dates and details of Goodman recordings, and his penchant for wire-rim glasses, spats and classic suits, transport listeners back to the time and mood of Benny Goodman’s “swing era”.

Bennett has made a great impression on several of Benny Goodman’s famous band members: the late vibraphonist Peter Appleyard, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and pianist Dick Hyman all strongly endorse Dave Bennett as “the closest ever” to Goodman’s sound and style. He has performed with them in the US and Canada and recorded with them as “special guests” on Dave’s two recent Arbors CDs.

Accompanying Bennett are accomplished artists Paul Keller (bass), Peter Siers (drums), Tad Weed (piano), Jim Cooper (vibraphone), and Hugh Leal (rhythm guitar).

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council and MCACA.
