Petar Jankovic, international award-winning classical guitarist and faculty member at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, joins forces with a string quartet comprised of brilliant musicians from the prestigious Indiana University. This collaboration creates a very unique and attractive classical crossover – chamber ensemble: string quartet led by guitar. The string quartet and guitar blend infuses new vigor and refreshing outlook in combination with the group’s expressive and enjoyable renditions. In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine, exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining Czech underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Rick’s surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa, Rick’s one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. Well, that was their original plan….

Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning book of 1960. Atticus Finch is a lawyer in a racially divided Alabama town in the 1930’s. He agrees to defend a young black man who is accused of raping a white woman. Many of the townspeople try to get Atticus to pull out of the trial, but he decides to go ahead. How will the trial turn out – and will it change any of the racial tension in the town?

Grand Rapids songwriter, Drew Nelson, will perform a special show in celebration of his highly anticipated new Red House Records debut Tilt-A-Whirl set to release on February 14.  He will be joined by band HWY 2, a who’s who of Michigan musicians that includes Drew Howard, Michael Crittenden, Brian Morrill, Jen Sygit and Mark Schrock.  An artist with an international reputation and several critically acclaimed albums under his belt, the folk/Americana singer writes as a witness to the lives and journeys of those he has met along the way.
“As you encounter the characters on this record, it becomes clear that Drew Nelson has dedicated and re-dedicated himself to getting at real human stories”, says acclaimed songwriter Peter Mulvey.  “Some of these characters are him, and some are people he knows, and all their stories let us know that Drew is standing in the Midwestern cold, seeing and telling as clearly as he can”, he added.

The Grand Rapids Symphony and conductor John Varineau return to the Dogwood Center on Friday, April 13 for a sure to be incredible performance!  Join us and you will experience a world-class orchestra performing for you live at the Dogwood !
Recognized as one of America’s leading regional orchestras, the Grand Rapids Symphony celebrates its 82nd anniversary this upcoming year, a tribute to an enduring partnership with the West Michigan community that has embraced it since the orchestra’s founding in 1930.
The evening’s program will include: Hungarian Dances by Brahms, The Three Cornered Hat by Falla, Classical Symphony by Prokofiev, Suite Pastoral by Chabrier, and Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov.

Garrett Borns is a gifted 20-year-old singer/songwriter from West Michigan. In 2010, his original composition The Only Paradise won the West Michigan Student Showcase Showstopper Award. You may have seen his recent performances at the Indie Rock Music Festival and as the opening act for the kick off to ArtPrize. His music is being aired on 105.3 HotFM and Star 105.7. Garrett was featured on the cover of Solace Magazine for their October 2011 issue highlighting the West Michigan Music scene.
In the spring of 2010 he returned from a sojourn to France, where he was being filmed for a series of “on the street” music videos throughout Paris. Garrett recently signed with Rezidual Records has been in the studio all summer working diligently on the tracks for his latest release.
His brand new CD will be available the night of his performance at the Dogwood!

“There is just now a fashion for upholding something called ‘Nicene’ Christianity. But the great creeds of the fourth and fifth centuries were never intended as a complete teaching syllabus, and when used that way they screen out the central theme of the four Gospels: How God Became King (aka The Kingdom of God). Western Christianity has thus lurched between a faith based on incarnation and cross (but without ‘kingdom’) and a social-gospel ‘kingdom’-movement (but without incarnation and cross). How can we put back together what the Gospels were trying to tell us all along?”
Tom Wright is a leading New Testament scholar and former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England. His academic work has usually been published under the name N. T. Wright; his books aimed at a more popular readership, such as What St Paul Really Said and Simply Christian, are published under the less formal name of Tom Wright. He is generally perceived as coming from a moderately evangelical perspective. He is associated with the so-called Third Quest for the Historical Jesus, and the New Perspective on Paul (a complex movement with many unique positions, originating from the probing works of James Dunn and E. P. Sanders). He argues that the current understanding of Jesus must be connected with what is known to be true about him from the historical perspective of first century Judaism and Christianity .
Wright has written over 50 books.
He has completed three books in a projected six-volume scholarly series Christian Origins and the Question of God. These are The New Testament and the People of God, Jesus and the Victory of God and The Resurrection of the Son of God.
He has also written books on a popular level, including The Challenge of Jesus and the recently completed twelve volume For Everyone Bible commentary series in a similar vein to William Barclay ‘s Daily Study Bible series.
