The Grand Rapids Symphony and conductor John Varineau return to the Dogwood Center on Wednesday, March 27 for a sure to be incredible performance! Join us and you will experience a world-class orchestra performing for you live at the Dogwood!
The evening’s program will include ballet musical selections from Faust by composer Charles Gounod, Aram Khachaturian’s “Gayane’s Adagio” from Gayane, Czech composer Smetana “The Moldau” from Ma Vlast, Mozart’s popular “Marriage of Figaro”, “Children’s Corner Suite” by composer Claude Debussy and featuring the artwork of Newaygo County youth, and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances”.

Grand Rapids Ballet’s “Program Three” is a mixed repertory program and a great way to experience a diverse selection of works all in one night!  Classical, neoclassical, and contemporary choreographers George Balanchine, Olivier Wevers, and Kirk Peterson.  “Program Three” includes “Amazed in Burning Dreams”, “The Sofa”, and Balanchine’s “Who Cares”.
“Who Cares?” – George Balanchine’s exuberant hit to the music of Gershwin comes to the Dogwood Center.
“Amazed in Burning Dreams” – Choreographed by Kirk Peterson with music from  Philip Glass’ score for the 1985 film Mishima, this work presents mind-boggling stamina, polished choreography, and sci-fi trimmings.
“The Sofa” – The latest work by Olivier Wevers premiered at Grand Rapids Ballet’s innovative dance series MOVEMEDIA in 2012 to rave reviews…and now it comes to the Dogwood Center!

Tony Reynolds is a seasoned, professional vocalist with a smooth four-octave voice and years of experience.  He has an extensive resume having lived and worked in Dallas, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.  For seven years Tony traveled the world singing backup for famed international singing star Tom Jones.  Tony has had the privilege of singing backup with other notable entertainers including Elton John and Gladys Knight.
While touring with Tom Jones, Tony has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Rachel Ray, Regis and Kelly, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The View, Dancing with the Stars, and Jimmy Kimmel.

John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” presented by New York City’s The Acting Company will be live on the Main Stage at the Dogwood!

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner John Steinbeck’s tale of two drifters is one of the most widely read stories in America. Written as both a novella and a script for a play, Of Mice and Men tells the tragic story to two California migrant ranch workers during the Great Depression. George and Lennie have delusions of making enough money to buy their own place. Lennie, a man-child, is a little boy in the body of a man. George is ever cautious of his gentle giant friend, dangerously powerful yet in need of constant reassurance.
Although Steinbeck emphasizes dreams throughout his work, his characters are often powerless, due to intellectual, economic and social realities. Fate is felt most heavily as George is left to face the question of how to deal with Lennie who, although in great danger, dreams only of their future, of their farm – as the sound of destiny bounces off mountains.

Kenny White opened for Judy Collins at the Dogwood Center in June 2012, and now he returns for his own show on January 19!  As a singer, songwriter and producer, White has worked with many notables and he has released four cd’s of his own.  His songs are filled with mature, contemplative, insightful, poignant, imaginative and hilarious lyrics that will have you laughing throughout the performance.

Kenny began his career in the 1970’s in Boston, touring extensively as the keyboard player for Jonathan Edwards and Livingston Taylor.  He then moved back to his native NYC where he soon was writing, performing, and producing the music for literally hundreds of commercials for TV and radio, many of which became standards of the genre.  Commercials enabled him to work with artists like Gladys Knight, Linda Ronstadt, Ricky Skaggs, Aaron Neville and even the London Symphony Orchestra.  Kenny also worked on many film soundtracks as a contributing writer/musician, including Message in a Bottle, A Walk on the Moon, and Where the Heart Is.  He produced Shawn Colvin’s Grammy-nominated song, “I Don’t Know Why” and performed on Marc Cohn’s platinum debut record.

After being hailed by reviewers from the NY Times to the San Francisco Chronicle for his “thrilling and unique” piano playing, Kenny chose to devote himself to making his first album; one that not only showcased his talent as a musician, but also as a lyricist.

Through those extensive studio years, he was able to enlist a stellar line-up of players for Uninvited Guest, many of whom were convinced that Kenny was finally heading to where he’d always belonged.  An early copy of his follow-up record, Symphony in 16 Bars, landed in the hands of Judy Collins, who immediately signed him to her own Wildflower Records, releasing that CD in 2005, as well as the EP, Never Like This, the following year.  His latest recording is Comfort in the Static, released to critical acclaim in the US and abroad.  As an added note, the album cover for Comfort in the Static was done by Fremont native, artist Jack Smith.

The Sleeping Beauty, a crowing jewel of Marius Petipa’s career, is often considered the finest achievement of the Classical ballet. It is a supreme demonstration of the challenge of Petipa’s style – steel point work, sharply accented spinning turns, soaring leaps, high extensions, brilliant battery (beats in the air), daring lifts and, in addition, it gives a fairy tale plot lavish stage treatment.
A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, lent itself perfectly to the full evening ballet theater.
The Russian National Ballet Theatre has over 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, and is one of the most respected dance companies in the world.
This production is a full length ballet in three acts with one intermission.

Calvin College January Series 2013 – Remote Live Webcast
Clark is associate provost for regional campuses and strategic projects and professor of youth, family, and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary. A well-known practitioner, adolescent and family scholar, and author, Clark has more than 30 years experience in direct ministry, including 15 years with Young Life, as well as positions with several churches, Denver Seminary, and Youth Specialties. He is a senior editor of Youthworker Journal and president of Foothill Community Ministries, Inc., the parent organization for the ParenTeen and HURT Seminars. Dr. Clark has remained in direct ministry with young people, and is committed to the equipping and training of men and women who recognize the Church’s mandate of reaching out to young people in the name of Christ. He is the author of many books, articles, and videos that focus primarily on relationships. Most recently, he published Hurt 2.0 and coauthored Sticky Faith with Fuller’s Kara Powell.

He is the founder of Crossing Borders, an actionable nonprofit dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance to North Korean refugees in China. Kim resides in Washington DC where he is helping the U.S. government understand the intricacies of international illicit networks, developing a socially responsible platform within Deloitte and acting as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
