The Dogwood Center and the Newaygo County People for Peace present the film “The Hundred Foot Journey”!
The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam, has a life filled with both culinary delights and profound loss. Drifting through Europe after fleeing political violence in India that killed the family restaurant business and their mother, the Kadams arrive in France. Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite, in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val inspires Papa Kadam to set up a Indian restaurant there. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory’s acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef. The resulting rivalry eventually escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In response, there is a bridging of sides initiated by Hassan, Marguerite and Madame Mallory herself, both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change both sides forever. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)

This evening we see how music expresses a culture of peace; our experience of it, our longings for it, and our need of it.  The Newaygo  County People for Peace, along with local sponsors, present 3 music groups and one solo musician—all of Newaygo county—in the annual Concert for Peace.  The musicians play music in 4 different styles but all have in common polished skill that makes listening delightful.  In addition, two talented student musicians will again bring us the beauty of piano music during interludes of the concert.

The music of Framing Rhythm draws the listener into the unity of all peoples of the world because some version of the framed drum is found in all cultures.  Amy Oak, Barb Pitcher, Beth Keloneva, and Brenda Huckins Bonter preserve the tradition of frame drumming with fascinating skill and musicality.  If you haven’t heard them yet, the beauty of their drumming will astonish you. My Name’s Not Steve, a blend of two local acoustic groups formed especially for this concert, features Peggy Maat, Charlie Johnson, and Shelly & Dan Wierenga.   The smooth harmony of the two women’s voices , expanded into 4-part harmony when the men join in, expresses the wonderful unity in human relationships.  Included in their traditional-style songs will be “Peace In Our Time”, by Steve Barber, former Newaygo school principal.  Instrument maker, Guido Guitars and Mandolins (231-924-1964) is sponsoring this group.

The warmth and welcoming sounds of Pryer Times comes from a young sister duo, Mary Pryer on guitar and Faith on String Bass.  More and more people in the area have seen and heard the careful attention they pay to each other as they sing their own, unique interpretation of gospel and familiar songs.  If kindness and trust can be sung, these girls can sing it! Sandra Bernard’s deep and soulful voice magnifies the meaningful lyrics of the songs she sings.  Her singing tonight will call us to open our eyes to those living on the edges of our individual and common worlds, and to recognize that we all belong to each other. She regularly hosts the Thursday Open Mic Evenings  at the River Stop Cafe in downtown Newaygo which is sponsoring her at this concert.

As we settle into our seats for the evening, James O’ Banion will play the piano for us. Jennifer Chiles Piano Service is sponsoring him in honor of Phyllis Jansma, a great supporter of both peace and music in the Fremont area. During intermission  we will again have piano music by Cody Routley, sponsored  by Gala Gourmet in downtown Newaygo.

This concert announces the beginning of the 30 Days of Peace, September 21 to October 20, a period of celebration, inquiry, and the action of building a culture of Peace.

SWEET DREAMS: MANDY BARNETT SINGS PATSY CLINE

An evening of enduring country and pop classics

Acclaimed recording artist and performer Mandy Barnett takes you on a sparkling musical journey performing an evening of Patsy Cline’s hits including “Sweet Dreams,” “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Walking After Midnight,” “Faded Love,” and more, along with other classic country and pop standards, and selections from her own albums. It’s a night of show-stopping entertainment, celebrating the great music of our time as performed by “a torch singer in the grandest sense of the word” (Allison Stewart, Chicago Tribune).

Mandy originated the role of “Patsy Cline” in the theatrical production Always…Patsy Cline at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium, where the performances sold out nightly, and she has wowed critics and audiences ever since. Mandy, in role as Patsy, appears on the original cast album recording.

Mandy is a frequent guest on the Grand Ole Opry, and is equally as comfortable onstage with symphony orchestras. Her robust delivery on her contemporary yet retro-sounding country and pop-tinged material harkens back to the likes of all-time great female singers and timeless sounds.

Among the many publications praising Mandy’s talents, the Los Angeles Times has heralded her “pipes of steel,” “big, brassy voice and vintage-sounding arrangements.” Time, People, Billboard, Rolling Stone, and other major magazines have likewise extolled Mandy’s world-class vocals, “preternatural interpretative gifts” (Dave Marsh, Playboy), and “natural musicality” (Ralph Novak, People).

Mandy has released critically lauded albums, including “I’ve Got a Right to Cry,” produced by the legendary Owen Bradley, who also produced Patsy Cline. Mandy’s current album, “I Can’t Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson,” fulfills a promise Mandy made to her friend and Country Music Hall of Fame member, singer/songwriter Don Gibson, and includes such iconic songs as the title track, “Sweet Dreams” (also recorded by Patsy Cline), and “Oh Lonesome Me.” Featuring this album as “starred and recommended,” USA Today calls Mandy one of the “finest classic country and torch singers” to come out of Nashville.

“Monsterpiece Theater” is a fun filled youth theater program where local youth will show off their new skills in acting, mime, juggling, acrobatics and very cool backlight illusions. Local performer Mat Emerick is the director…or “monster maker” as he likes to call it. The program is a very funny, family friendly Halloween show. No blood or gore, “Monsterpiece Theater” is a masterpiece of spooky, kooky skits and music!

Deep in a box of old records adorned with names such as Buddy Holly, Janis Martin and Elvis Presley lies the spirit of Delilah DeWylde. She takes the best of 1950’s Americana and adds her own charming and engaging signature to it. Whether boppin’ to a rockabilly classic or performing one of her great originals, Delilah puts on a show that is not to be missed! The band is rounded out by the fantastic Lee Harvey on guitar, and the solid rhythm of Johnny HiWatt on the snare drum. This hot combo will have your toes tapping and your face smiling! With incredible enthusiasm, impressive vocal and a dynamic stage presence, Kari Lynch knows how to deliver an exciting, powerful and unforgettable performance.

When, Kari was 6-years-old, her grandmother played her, Patsy Cline’s cassette tape in the car. The first song was “Crazy” and she fell in love with country music. An introduction to, Garth Brook’s, “No Fences” shortly thereafter sealed the deal. She started writing songs and performing and has been captivating crowds since, with no plans to slow down.

Her dedication and love of singing and songwriting has paid off in a big way. In 2013 and 2014 she played hundreds of dates, many of those opening for some of country music’s most recognized artists including, The Band Perry, Little Big Town, Dierks Bentley, Thomas Rhett, Alabama, The Charlie Daniels Band, and many more. Kari is constantly working to perfect her craft and keep the momentum going. “To look at those lineups and see my name on the same bill blows me away every time and makes me appreciate success that’s built from the ground up. I know what can be accomplished with hard work.”

It’s an appreciation for her dedicated fan base and striving to create good and honest music that also fuels the fire. Her talent for songwriting and connecting with fans is reflected in an ever growing, dedicated fan base that continually flocks to shows, takes her album home and follows, Kari on all of her social media networks. “Music has always been about connecting with people for me. I started writing music and singing when I was 7-years-old because it was the only way I knew how to figure out life. It’s a blessing that I get to perform original songs and have relentless, amazing fans who are so supportive in every aspect and always hungry for new music.”

Kari’s first acoustic EP, “one happy love song…” debuted on the iTunes “New and Noteworthy” list for country music in 2009 and stayed there for 6 weeks. Her second album project, a full band/self-titled EP, released to 5-star ratings and reviews and received radio play on several stations.

Her most recent project, “Kari Lynch Band EP” has seen similar success. The singles, “Sapphire Blues” and “Sincerely, Gone” quickly gained radio play in regular rotation on several stations. In November of 2013, she worked with the Michigan based film company, Such Video, to create her first music video for an original song, “Nowhere Now.” The video gathered attention from many media outlets and continues to further her establishment as one of the most promising acts on the country scene.

Kari’s talents, extraordinary work ethic, and passion for performing, writing and creating music that extends to the audience with every lyric and melody is undeniable.
