SUMMARY:Saturday\, June 10 - Goldpine 7:30 p.m. Black Box
DESCRIPTION:Through a chance encounter in Nashville back in 2006\, Benjamin and Kassie Wilson were sure of each other from the start. “Kassie knew she was going to marry me from the first time she saw me…and she was right\,” Ben gloats. Formerly known as ‘My One and Only’\, the duo has reimagined their “southern-soul\,” “curious-grit” and emotionally honest lyrics into Goldpine. After nearly a decade of homing in on their sound\, they’re ready to give the world their self-produced debut LP\, One. \nWith this fresh start\, Goldpine wastes no time showing what they stand for. Their lead single\, “Wander Away\,” is somewhat of a public service announcement about mental health. “We explored the ideas of separating yourself from worries and giving yourself a break\,” Ben shares. “I think it’s so important that when we are in a place where we feel like we are in need\, maybe that is the exact time to reach out to others who are also in need.” The track begins with a soft picking guitar\, alongside Ben & Kassie’s unmistakable harmonies — sonically putting you at ease — leading up to a fuller sound that showcases Kassie’s powerhouse of a voice. \nStaying true to their vision from the very beginning\, Goldpine continues to stand out. With their debut album of “heart-wrenching songs about loss\, raucous tunes about how music is perceived as an art\, and short songs about being over-zealous” on the way\, 2023 shows an auspicious future for the pair. \nClick here for tickets. Tickets are $12.50 each. General admission\, Black Box. Tables can be reserved with the purchase of eight tickets. The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont. Doors open for seating at 7:00 p.m. Online sales close two hours prior to events\, please call the box office for ticket availability at 231-924-8885 if online sales have ended. SUMMARY:Friday\, May 26 - "Liar Lear King" Satellite Collective NYC and Grand Rapids Ballet 7:30 p.m. Main Stage
DESCRIPTION:The Dogwood audience will be immersed in live multimedia and dance\, emotional animated film\, and recorded music from cutting edge string quartets to Brooklyn-based digital productions. The program features six athletic dancers of Grand Rapids Ballet\, and artists from Satellite Collective of New York. \n“Liar Lear King” is a bright modern ballet set in the New York City of 1972\, adapted from Shakespeare’s story of family betrayal and tragedy\, “King Lear.” It directly faces the impact of narcissism and bullying on our society. The story is focused not on King Lear and his tragedy\, but on Cordelia and her epic journey as she becomes a force who can mount an invasion of her own country\, only to die at the hands of her own sisters. \nClick here to purchase tickets. Tickets are $17.50. SUMMARY:Saturday\, May 13 - Eddie 9V 7:30 p.m. Black Box
DESCRIPTION:All his life\, Eddie 9V (9-volt) has acted on instinct. Aged just 15\, this old-soul artist turned away from the path of college and jobs to burst all guns blazing onto the roots and blues club circuit of his native Atlanta\, Georgia. Eddie forked hard left digging back into the catalogues of blues giants like Al Green\, Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Freddie King and Percy Sledge. “I took inspiration from Albert Collins\, Otis Rush\, Mike Bloomfield. All those great records were done live with their buddies and no overdubs. I wanted the playing to be spot-on – but even if we made a mistake\, we kept going.” \nEddie 9V not only pricked up the ears of the music press (“A huge talent\,” wrote Blues Blast\, “to be noticed and followed”)\, but earned a respect on the scene. With release of his album Little Black Flies (2021) there’s a sense of an artist coming full circle: the kid who once loitered outside the clubs of Atlanta now leading Georgia’s greatest players into the studio. Certainly\, these recordings gave much-needed catharsis to the musicians who created them. But perhaps Eddie’s aim is to pass that spirit on to everyone who hears the record. “It makes my day to please someone after they work all day\,” he says. “My job is to make them smile and let the music make them forget – or remember.” \nClick here for tickets. Tickets are $17.50 each. SUMMARY:Thursday\, May 4 - May Erlewine 7:30 p.m. Main Stage
DESCRIPTION:One of the Midwest’s most prolific and passionate songwriters\, Erlewine has a gift for writing songs of substance that feel both fresh and soulfully familiar. Musically\, these messages are wrapped up in traditional folk roots\, Americana\, old-time country swing\, soul\, and even rock and pop sensibilities. \nErlewine’s music has touched people all over the world. Her words have held solace for weary hearts\, offered a light in the darkness\, and held space for the pain and joy of being alive in these times. SUMMARY:Saturday\, February 11 - Dave Bennett 'Rockin' the 50s' Main Stage
DESCRIPTION:Dave has been a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall with The New York Pops (2013) and has been featured with 35 other US and Canadian orchestras including Nashville\, Detroit\, Rochester\, Omaha\, Toronto\, Calgary\, Vancouver\, Orlando\, San Antonio\, Jacksonville\, Portland\, OR and Portland\, ME.  Some of his annual appearances include The Elkhart Jazz Festival\, The Suncoast Classic Jazz Festival\, The Arizona Classic Jazz Festival\, The Sacramento Hot Jazz Jubilee\, The Clambake Music Festival\, and The Redwood Coast Music Festival. \nDave has been featured on NPR Radio’s “Jazz at Riverwalk.” He made his European debut in 2008 at The Bern Jazz Festival (Switzerland) in a combo with jazz legends and Benny Goodman band alumni guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and vibraphonist\, the late Peter Appleyard. \nIn March 2022\, Dave and his band performed to a sold-out audience at New York City’s Birdland Theater. Dave is a Mack Avenue Records artist. His 2013 CD “Don’t Be That Way” met with critical acclaim.  His second release\, Blood Moon\, which features five originals and six pop/jazz covers\, reached No 24 on the Billboard Jazz charts in 2018. \nDuring the isolation of the pandemic\, fate steered Bennett’s time off the road and pushed him into his home studio where he transcended his jazz leanings altogether.  Released in June 2022\, “Nowhere Fast” taps into the pain and joy of living in these trying times\, the power of healing\, and music’s ability to transform isolation into inspiration.  Road songs\, reverb-laded guitar solos that could power a surf documentary\, and memories of loves and lives lost are the mile markers that make up his latest release. \nClick here to purchase tickets. Tickets are $20.00 each. The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont. SUMMARY:January 27 – January Series of Calvin University – Dr. Kate Bowler – 12:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kate Bowler \nLIFE AFTER PERFECT \nUnderwritten by: The Center for Excellence in Preaching \nKate Bowler is a New York Times bestselling author\, podcast host\, professor at Duke University\, and incurable optimist. She studies the cultural stories we tell ourselves about success\, suffering\, and whether (or not) we’re capable of change. At 35\, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer\, causing her to think in different terms about the research and beliefs she had been studying. \nIn her latest memoir\, No Cure for Being Human (and Other Truths I Need to Hear)\, Bowler grapples with her diagnosis\, her ambition\, and her faith as she tries to come to terms with limitations in a culture that promises anything is possible. She finds that we need one another because life is beautiful yet terrible and full of hope\, despair\, and everything in between. \nBowler’s work—including three other solo-written books and a co-authored book of spiritual reflections—has received widespread media attention from NPR\, The Today Show\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, the TED Stage\, and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. On her podcast\, Everything Happens\, Bowler has spoken with people like Malcolm Gladwell\, Matthew McConaughey\, and Anne Lamott about what wisdom and truth they’ve uncovered during difficult circumstances. \nThis lecture will be broadcast live at the Dogwood Center from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Admission is free. \nFor more information on the Calvin University January Series click here. \nThe Dogwood Center\, a remote site for the Calvin University January Series\, is supported in part by the Fremont Area Community Foundation.
