SUMMARY:September 2 – The Rough & Tumble – 7:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:From their upbeat\, commanding stage presence and sharp banter to their earworm-inducing melodies and heartstring lyrics\, this dumpster-folk/thriftstore Americana duo has been writing and performing together since 2007. Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler inevitably formed The Rough & Tumble in 2011 as the friends turned into bandmates. In 2015\, after a bad Nashville landlord left them without heat for 12 days during an ice storm\, the bandmates turned spouses decided to hit the road. They sold everything they could\, bought a 16’ camper (despite the warning of their families and the lot salesman)\, packed up their instruments\, their dog and hit the road. They have been touring relentlessly since with their two 100lb rescue dogs\, Mud Puddle and Magpie Mae. \nOn February 19\, 2021 The Rough & Tumble dug into the severed branch of their family tree\, bringing their newest work\, We’re Only Family If You Say So\, a full length record about what it takes to be family– and what it means to lose it. As with their previous two albums\, it was recorded in East Nashville\, TN with producer/engineer Dave Coleman. The raw\, emotive nature intersects with the sweet\, nearly upbeat tone that touches a nerve unfortunately familiar to listeners\, particularly in the aftermath of division in both nation and families alike. \nThe new record follows on the 2019 release Howling Back at the Wounded Dog\, a 10-song album wherein response was audible\, with audiences literally howling back at performances coast-to-coast. SUMMARY:August 27 – Marshall Crenshaw – 7:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1953 in Detroit\, Michigan\, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at age ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John Lennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an understudy in New York\, then in the West Coast company followed by a national touring company.\nRemoving himself from that situation in Feb. 1980\, Marshall settled in New York City. After crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock\, Marshall recorded his debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” (for Betrock’s Shake Records label)\, which led to a deal with Warner Bros. His debut album\, Marshall Crenshaw\, was acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a singular songwriter\, record maker\, and guitarist. The album spawned the hit single “Someday\, Someway\,” and other classics such as\n“(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time”\, “Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl.” \nOver the course of a career that has spanned three decades\, 13 albums\, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations\, film and TV appearances (Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of performances\, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of artfulness\, craftsmanship and passion\, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base. \nAlong with touring around the country and the occasional recording project\, Marshall currently hosts his own radio show\, “The Bottomless Pit”\, every Saturday at 10 PM on New York’s WFUV. SUMMARY:August 13 – Ralston Bowles - 7:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Widely revered as “the ambassador of West Michigan music\,” award-winning folk and Americana artist Ralston Bowles is a uniquely compelling troubadour whose influence and songs reach across the United States and the globe. The musician and singer-songwriter has released several critically acclaimed albums – including “Carwreck Conversations” and “Rally at the Texas Hotel” – containing songs that have been covered and reinterpreted by a host of indie-folk artists\, from Peter Mulvey to Caroline Aiken. He has frequently toured the United States and Europe\, sharing stages with the likes of Bob Dylan\, Shawn Colvin\, Arlo Guthrie\, Hothouse Flowers and many more. His compelling and insightful songs have inspired a generation of musicians\, evidenced by a recent double-album (“Michigan Music”) compiled as a tribute to Bowles\, a project featuring 33 Michigan bands and solo artists. \nRalston Bowles’s father played the fiddle\, guitar and banjo in the Appalachia hills before he moved to Gary\, Indiana\, to work the steel mills. Ralston’s first professional job was at the age of 16 when he was asked to make up one of his story songs for a neighborhood party.  After graduation he found himself playing in clubs and coffeehouses throughout the Midwest\, making up songs about the people and places he visited. He has received awards and recognition from American Songwriter Magazine\, NSAI/CMT\, Unisong\, the International Song Competition and Mountain Stage New Song\, among many others.  As a Kerrville New Folk finalist\, he even found himself opening for such artists as Shawn Colvin\, T-Bone Burnett and Arlo Guthrie. His first recording\, “Carwreck Conversations\,” was produced with Marvin Etzioni  and earned him triple Jammy Awards locally and recognition as best musician in West Michigan by Grand Rapids magazine. It also led him to his first commercial release through Judy Collins’ Wildflower Records. His second album Rally at the Texas Hotel also won best album of the year and features a duet with Bob Dylan band leader\, Charlie Sexton. He has become a bi-annual favorite at Boston’s Club Passim.  He first came to Italy 4 years ago to participate in a Townes Van Zandt Tribute night in Milan at Casa 139 with a number of world traveled musicians celebrating the Texas songwriter. Ralston’s newest album “Little Miracles” features 35 musicians\, all of them top-drawer players was produced by band leader for Emmy Lou Harris\, Phil Madeira. Ralston recorded his parts while in the midst of chemotherapy treating colon cancer. As the story unfolds\, the characters Antipholus and Dromio go to Ephesus to find them after both being separated from their twins in a shipwreck. The other set of twins live in Ephesus\, and the new arrivals cause a series of incidents of mistaken identity. At the end\, the twins find each other and their parents and resolve all of the problems caused earlier.
