SUMMARY:October 8 - Sarah Potenza - 7:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:“I work for me\,” Sarah Potenza declares at the beginning of Road to Rome\, kicking off her second solo album — a record of self-empowered R&B\, swaggering soul\, and contemporary blues — with her own declaration of independence. \nClick here to get your tickets now! Tickets are $20 each. General admission\, Black Box.  The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont. Doors open for seating at 7:00 p.m. Online sales close two hours prior to events\, please call the box office for ticket availability at 231-924-8885 if online sales have ended. \n  \nFilled with messages of self-worth\, determination\, and drive\, Road to Rome shines new light on a songwriter whose career already includes multiple albums as front-woman of Sarah and the Tall Boys\, a game-changing appearance on The Voice\, and an acclaimed solo debut titled Monster. Released one year after she sang in front of 12 million people during The Voice’s eighth season\, 2016’s Monster prompted Rolling Stone to gush\, “Potenza is to the blues what Adele is to pop: a colossal-voiced singer who merges her old-school influences with a modernistic sound.” That sound deepens and intensifies with Road to Rome\, an album that shows the full scope of Potenza’s aims and ambitions. \nAnd just who is Sarah Potenza? She’s a songwriter. A bold\, brassy singer. A businesswoman. A proud\, loud-mouthed Italian-American from Providence\, Rhode Island\, with roots in Nashville and an audience that stretches across the Atlantic. Road to Rome spells it all out. Co-written by Potenza\, produced by Jordan Brooke Hamlin (Indigo Girls\, Lucy Wainwright Roche)\, and recorded with a female-heavy cast of collaborators\, the album isn’t just her own story. It’s the story of all artists — particularly women\, who remain the minority within the male-dominated music industry — who’ve learned to trust their instincts\, refusing to let mainstream trends dilute their own artistic statements. \nFor Potenza\, such lessons were learned during the writing sessions for Road to Rome\, which took place aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean\, as well as at her home in East Nashville. It was during the cruise that she first began writing songs with Justin Wiseman\, a piano player from Austin\, TX. For years\, she and her husband\, Ian Crossman\, had worked together as a duo\, splitting their musical duties more or less equally\, writing songs with guitar in hand\, and merging their very different influences. This was something different\, though — something about the piano that allowed Potenza the chance to rediscover her own voice\, making an album whose unique approach to soul music was entirely her own. Although Crossman and Wiseman’s contributions as co-writers can be heard throughout Road to Rome’s tracks\, the album represents a strong shift in dynamic\, with Potenza leading the charge. \nWhen it came time to record Road to Rome at MOXE\, Jordan Brooke Hamlin’s Nashville-area studio\, Potenza looked to a wide range of musicians for influence. She turned to Whitney Houston. To Lauryn Hill. To Pops Staples\, the Dirty Projectors\, RL Burnside\, Bette Midler\, and more. Those artists gave her inspiration not only on a musical level\, but on an emotional and thematic level\, too. They were artists who spoke with conviction\, chasing their own muses into unique\, personalized territory. Potenza did the same\, turning Road to Rome into an album filled with everything from the torch song balladry of “Earthquake” (a love letter to Crossman\, thanking him for years of support ) to the funky fire of “Dickerson and Queen” (where Potenza howls\, swoons\, and croons over bass grooves and swirling organ\, reminding everyone that\, “I don’t give a fuck about nothing but the music”). She even makes room for a piano-propelled cover of “Worthy\,” originally written by Grammy-nominated icon Mary Gauthier\, who personally sent the song to Potenza. \nReleased on International Women’s Day 2019\, Road to Rome is the sound of a songwriter taking the wheel and driving toward her own destination. This is Sarah Potenza’s strongest album to date: a battle cry from a soul singer and blues belter\, shot through with pop melodies\, rock & roll attitude. \n  \nClick here to get your tickets now! Tickets are $20 each. General admission\, Black Box.  The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont. Doors open for seating at 7:00 p.m. \nOnline sales close two hours prior to events\, please call the box office for ticket availability at 231-924-8885 if online sales have ended.

SUMMARY:September 2 – The Rough & Tumble – 7:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:From their upbeat\, commanding stage presence and sharp banter to their earworm-inducing melodies and heartstring lyrics\, this dumpster-folk/thriftstore Americana duo has been writing and performing together since 2007. Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler inevitably formed The Rough & Tumble in 2011 as the friends turned into bandmates. In 2015\, after a bad Nashville landlord left them without heat for 12 days during an ice storm\, the bandmates turned spouses decided to hit the road. They sold everything they could\, bought a 16’ camper (despite the warning of their families and the lot salesman)\, packed up their instruments\, their dog and hit the road. They have been touring relentlessly since with their two 100lb rescue dogs\, Mud Puddle and Magpie Mae. \nOn February 19\, 2021 The Rough & Tumble dug into the severed branch of their family tree\, bringing their newest work\, We’re Only Family If You Say So\, a full length record about what it takes to be family– and what it means to lose it. As with their previous two albums\, it was recorded in East Nashville\, TN with producer/engineer Dave Coleman. The raw\, emotive nature intersects with the sweet\, nearly upbeat tone that touches a nerve unfortunately familiar to listeners\, particularly in the aftermath of division in both nation and families alike. \nThe new record follows on the 2019 release Howling Back at the Wounded Dog\, a 10-song album wherein response was audible\, with audiences literally howling back at performances coast-to-coast. The opening track “The Hardest Part” won the Independent Music Award’s Best Americana Song of 2019. \nClick here to get your tickets now! Tickets are $20 each. General admission\, Black Box.  The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont. Doors open for seating at 7:00 p.m. \nOnline sales close two hours prior to events\, please call the box office for ticket availability at 231-924-8885 if online sales have ended.

SUMMARY:August 27 – Marshall Crenshaw – 7:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1953 in Detroit\, Michigan\, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at age ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John Lennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an understudy in New York\, then in the West Coast company followed by a national touring company.\nRemoving himself from that situation in Feb. 1980\, Marshall settled in New York City. After crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock\, Marshall recorded his debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” (for Betrock’s Shake Records label)\, which led to a deal with Warner Bros. His debut album\, Marshall Crenshaw\, was acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a singular songwriter\, record maker\, and guitarist. The album spawned the hit single “Someday\, Someway\,” and other classics such as\n“(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time”\, “Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl.” \nOver the course of a career that has spanned three decades\, 13 albums\, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations\, film and TV appearances (Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of performances\, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of artfulness\, craftsmanship and passion\, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base. \nAlong with touring around the country and the occasional recording project\, Marshall currently hosts his own radio show\, “The Bottomless Pit”\, every Saturday at 10 PM on New York’s WFUV. Other current projects include a documentary film-in progress about legendary record producer Tom Wilson. \n“Although he was seen as a latter-day Buddy Holly at the outset\, he soon proved too talented and original to be anyone but himself.” – Trouser Press \n  \nClick here to get your tickets now! Tickets are $20 each\, reserved seating.  The Dogwood Center is located one mile east of downtown Fremont.
