SUMMARY:January 27 – January Series of Calvin University – Dr. Kate Bowler – 12:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kate Bowler \nLIFE AFTER PERFECT \nUnderwritten by: The Center for Excellence in Preaching \nKate Bowler is a New York Times bestselling author\, podcast host\, professor at Duke University\, and incurable optimist. She studies the cultural stories we tell ourselves about success\, suffering\, and whether (or not) we’re capable of change. At 35\, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer\, causing her to think in different terms about the research and beliefs she had been studying. \nIn her latest memoir\, No Cure for Being Human (and Other Truths I Need to Hear)\, Bowler grapples with her diagnosis\, her ambition\, and her faith as she tries to come to terms with limitations in a culture that promises anything is possible. She finds that we need one another because life is beautiful yet terrible and full of hope\, despair\, and everything in between. \nBowler’s work—including three other solo-written books and a co-authored book of spiritual reflections—has received widespread media attention from NPR\, The Today Show\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, the TED Stage\, and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. On her podcast\, Everything Happens\, Bowler has spoken with people like Malcolm Gladwell\, Matthew McConaughey\, and Anne Lamott about what wisdom and truth they’ve uncovered during difficult circumstances. \nThis lecture will be broadcast live at the Dogwood Center from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Admission is free. \nFor more information on the Calvin University January Series click here. \nThe Dogwood Center\, a remote site for the Calvin University January Series\, is supported in part by the Fremont Area Community Foundation.
