November 10 – Three Part Invention – 7:30 p.m.

July 24, 2013 by Dogwood

threepartinventioncoverThree of the most original instrumentalists to ever mutate out of the classical gene pool join forces to breathe new life into the time-honored piano trio tradition. Violinist Tracy Silverman, pianist Philip Aaberg, and cellist Mike Block are on a mission to redefine contemporary chamber music.
Performing works from their new all-Bach CD, “Three Part Invention”, an album of reinterpreted versions of Bach masterpieces, their live concerts also include original works and reinventions of other classical repertoire. Their iconoclastic performances are full of approachable good humor and break all the pretenses of classical performance conventions – jazz, pop, threeparttracys and world influences paradoxically accent the beauty, elegance, and soulfulness of traditional masterworks.
All three artists have created vibrant solo careers by stretching from their classical roots into folk, jazz, rock, and world music. Together in Three Part Invention, their paths converge in homage to the music they first loved.

September 21 – Fremont John – 7:30 p.m.

July 12, 2013 by Dogwood

fremontjohn“Tampa Bay’s most seasoned and professional original singer/songwriter.” -MusicTampaBay.com
That’s right folks, Fremont John is not from Fremont, Michigan.
A distinctive acoustic guitar style with the resonate growl of a baritone voice is reason enough to listen to the music of Fremont John. Add it to his penchant for taking the classic songs we all know and creating them in his own style and you have a captivating show of musical ability. Developing his musical talents since age 5, he’s played the music of the classical greats to the rock hall of famers and now pen’s his own music with the richness of his life experiences weaving a variety of styles into his own.
As an electric guitar rock-n-roller during his early career, Fremont John toured extensively throughout the Midwest with his band Innervision. Taking a break from regular performance and touring for nearly 25 years, he continued to perform sporadically at venues thoughout Michigan while writing some of the songs that became a part of his first CD, ACOUSTIC THUNDER, released in 1999. That same year Fremont John returned to full time performance, honing a professional music career on the stages of the popular Key West venues. He continues to be a favorite both solo and trio performer at Sloppy Joe’s, The Bull, Vigilio’s and Willy T’s in Key West where he still does a monthly tour.
Record producer Larry Baeder, wowed by FJ’s songwriting, initiated a collaboration with deeply talented seasoned musicians and recording technicians in NYC’s Pyramid Studio in 2004. The 2005 indie CD release of TIMELINE included Richard Crooks (Dr. John, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan) on drums, Fernando Saunders (Lou Reed, Pat Benatar, Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer) on bass, Charlie Giordano (Bruce Springsteen, Pat Benatar) adding keyboard, Crispin Cio (Joe Cocker, Rolling Stones) on sax, with Larry Baeder (James Montgomery, Carly Simon, Apollo Theater House) adding guitar licks. This collaboration resulted in a national radio campaign with airplay in many US cities and global airplay via hundreds of Internet stations. The CD received strong reviews in the industry and continues to enjoy strong sales at live shows and online.
GUITAR SONGS, the first all instrumental effort, was brought on by years of requests from fans for “more guitar!”. The CD features Fremont John’s identifiable melodic and distinctive acoutic style that captivates his live audience. Tampa Bay’s premier online music e-zine, The Bay Buzz (www.thebaybuzz.org) writes, “John’s sound is clean and his acoutic lead tone is wonderful; clear and crisp but also warm.” And then, “If you enjoy melodic guitar, buy this disc. A good instrumental CD is difficult to make but this one (Guitar Songs) is excellent.” -Pete Gallagher, WMNF 88.5 FM, Tampa, FL.
Fremont John’s solo live performance is a relaxed and comfortable way to kick back and enjoy music. Whether it’s a remake of a classic or an original selection, the guitar work is sure to please and the stories surrounding the songs are delightfully entertaining. When backed by a rhythm section for a trio sound it’s sure to be a rocking good time as he incorporates an ‘electric’ sound into his trademark Blue Taylor acoustic guitar. With an uncanny ability to ‘read’ his audience, Fremont John tailors his vast musical selections to the mood of his listeners like a master entertainer.

September 14 – Vincent Hayes – 7:30 p.m.

July 12, 2013 by Dogwood

vincenthayes2013web1Vincent Hayes returns to the Dogwood Center Black Box!!
Nominated by the Blues Foundation for the prestigious 2011 Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut” for their internationally successful debut CD, “Reclamation”, the West Michigan-based group has carved a rapidly growing reputation as one of the favorite roots and blues bands around.
Driven by Hayes dynamic, sensitive guitar work and one of the most powerful rhythm sections in the modern blues industry, the four piece band’s performances are dominated by grooving rhythms, stinging guitar, memorable songs, and lively, show stopping musicianship.
It has been a busy summer for Vincent Hayes. Most recently he and his band (formerly known as The Vincent Hayes Project), were honored with an invitation to warm up the stage for the “King of the Blues” himself, BB King, at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. Just a few weeks later they found themselves in their first official “headliner” slot on a triple bill with blues legend Buddy Guy, and blues/rock hero Jonny Lang at the 2013 Coast West Festival, where they quickly gained the favor of the crowd of 9,000 rock and blues fans.

With a new CD, “The Grind”, just released in late August, Hayes and his stellar rhythm section showcase their evolution as a songwriter and a guitar force to be reckoned with. There are eight new Hayes originals on “The Grind”, in addition to an interpretation of “Inner City Blues”, the 1971 classic by Marvin Gaye, and the moody and dark “Not Tonight”, a collaborative song penned by West Michigan singer/songwriter Joel Toppen, and arranged by Hayes and the band.

In February 2011, Vincent and the band swept the WYCE Jammie Awards by winning four Jammies in the categories of “Album of the Year, Best Blues Album, Best New Artist, and Producer of the Year (Glenn Brown)”, before receiving two 2011 Blues Blast Award Nominations for “Best New Artist and the Sean Costello Rising Star Award.”  The CD “Reclamation was” additionally voted as one of the top 100 Blues CD’s of 2010-2011 by Real Blues magazine, and Vincent also appeared on the cover of the March 2012 issue of France’s Blues & Co. magazine
