September 11 – Film "Beyond Belief" – 7:30 p.m.

August 7, 2011 by Dogwood

A moving yet beautiful film, “Beyond Belief” is showing at the Dogwood Center during Newaygo County’s “30 Days of Peace”.  beyond-belief
Susan Retik and Patti Quigley were two ordinary soccer moms living in the affluent suburbs of Boston until the tragedy of September 11 struck.  Rather than turn inward, grief compelled these women to focus on empowering widows in the country where the terrorists who took their husbands’ lives were trained:  Afghanistan.
As Susan and Patti make the courageous journey from their comfortable neighborhoods to the most desperate afghan villages, they discover a powerful bond with each other, an unlikely kinship with widows halfway around the world, and a profound way to move beyond tragedy.  From the ruins of the World Trade Center to Kabul and back, “Beyond Belief” is a journey of personal strength, international reconciliation and a testament to the vision that peace can be forged…. one woman at a time.

October 8 – Midnight Cattle Callers – 7:30 p.m.

August 4, 2011 by Dogwood

When listening to the Midnight Cattle Callers, you find yourself back in a time when AM radio is king.  They have the ability to transport the listener to a different time.  Since the midnightcattle-2 Midnight Cattle Callers have come on the scene in late 2009, they have been carving out their own unique style of country music.  It’s swingy, much like the 30’s/40’s big band era that they pull influences from.  The vocals are sweet and juicy, yet with the distinct Telecaster growl behind them, it’s too twang not to be country.
The core-band; comprised of Dee Foster on guitar and lead vocals, Seth Sutton on upright bass, with Roger Brown on the electric twang-box and Luke Gitchel on the jazz box guitar, banjo and mandolin, rounding out the ensemble; epitomizes the sound that embraces a simpler time.  Their warm country sounds are a tribute to the hardscrabble towns and the people scattered across the American landscape.
mcc-albumcover-300Their songs have the lyrical sensibilities of the wandering cowboy poets of yesterday, songs filled with heartache, pain, unrequited love all with the underlining hope and longing for something better.  Dee Foster, the songbird for the Midnight Cattle Callers, pens the original material with Seth Sutton who, with help from the rest of the band, compliments her with rich harmonies.
With the release of their first studio album “Midnight Cattle Callers”, the group scored a home run, winning the G.L.A.M.A (the Great Lakes Acoustic Music Association) band competition, earning them a coveted slot and rave reviews at the 2011 Cooper’s Glen Music Festival, along side Grammy Award winner, Peter Rowen.  A few months later the Midnight Cattle Callers received a 5 out of 5 star review and was chosen to be May 2011’s album of the month from “Country Music People magazine”.
