August 11 – "Satellite Empire" – 7:30 p.m.
“Satellite” is an original ballet choreographed by Troy Schumacher of the New York City Ballet with musical direction by Nick Jaina and Nathan Lanston of Hush Records, Portland and performance by dancers of the New
York City Ballet. This is a ballet with historical sweep and beauty – a story of love through war and time of crisis. It is set in an age of decadence.
This new work is set to an epic poem by Kevin Draper with photography by Lora Robertson of Leica Master Photographers.
“Satellite” is an original work of collaboration programmed by Satellite Gallery Arts Retreat and the Dogwood Center. The work is a product of coast to coast collaboration. The ballet has geometric sweep and beauty and is a story of love in crisis in an age of war and decadence.
Schumacher’s choreeography is precise and compels with moments of poetic beauty. Digital stage settings hold the dancers and audience in an atmosphere of surprising boldness and Jaina’s musical ensemble of piano, violin and viola traces an emotional arc that grips the imagination.
The evening will also include performance of excerpts of Balanchine’s “AGON”, courtesy of the Balanchine Trust, and from recent work by Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martens of the New York City Ballet.
Tickets: $15. Main Stage. 7:30 p.m.
